msconfig/startup questions

xp pro software...

I have a problem when I log into windows with programs starting that I dont want to run.
More specifically AOL IM stuff, plus some other programs... My fiance is insistant on keeping the AOL IM on even though Ive removed it several times.

I know years ago I was having problems with my resources and at the time was using windows 98 with MSN dialup...they had my go into startup and went down the line and we unchecked all the items I didnt want running,which in turn increased the speed and resources of the computer.

The problem I have now is I cant understand what items are needed and am afraid of turning something off that I shouldnt.

Is there a bare list of items that should always be checked when I open my msconfig/startup tag?

I managed to find the AOL disable during startup once, but as soon as she used aol im again its like it reset itself to open as soon as someone logs into the computer.

Im using AVG just incase that matters.

Any help here?

 

Well it might be best for you to figure out yourself what processes you wanna keep and what you dont want but heres a tool to lookup your processes

Why not set up the other user as a user in her own right and then what you want at startup as yourself and you are presumably the administrator of the OS.
You can go to msconfig and drill down to show non m$ programs and then close off those you don't want. The basics are that you need your Av and firewall operating at startup for safety - any additional are up to you.
