I need to edit a file using MSDOS (msvcrt.dll), but when I type in the folder where it's located (C:\Windows\System), it says Bad Command or File Name.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong or how I can fix it? (I reallllly need to fix this file because my internet isn't working properly.)

    Please help me!!!

Why do you need to edit it in msdos, you can use Notepad to do the editing. Just open it up in notepad. Also, why are your going to be editing that file?

Binary file editing from the command line is usually done with debug.exe, but that's a rather difficult program to use. You can also use a binary or hexadecimal Windows editor. In any case, I'm not understanding why you need to directly edit a .dll file, especially the Microsoft Visual C++ Run Time library.

BBJ. Not sure why you would want to edit a dll file.

    Google http://www.google.com/search?as_q=msvcrt.dll&num=20&hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&lr=lang_en&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_qdr=all&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=&safe=images
will give you lots of links to download a new copy. I suggest that you rename your existing msvcrt.dll to something like msvcrt.bbj (for billybobjoe) and then download a fresh copy and install in c:\windows\system. Bazza

I need to edit the msvcrt.dll file because it is giving me an error in IE and forcing it to shutdown. Another thread said to rename the existing file msvcrt.old or something like that, so that I can install a new downloaded one. The only problem is that I am not allowed to modify the name, delete, or replace the current file. In the other thread, http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=25409, deperino says to rename the file you have to use MSDOS on startup. It wasn't working for me, that is why I was wondering if I was doing something wrong.

Sorry, I didn't mean editing the file itself, I just need to rename it and I don't know how.

Assuming you are using w98 - hold down the Crtl key as soon as you fire up the computer. This will open you up to a DOS screen. Choose Command Prompt of the items numerically listed - navigate to the appropriate file and rename it - using the good old dos language. IE rename "msvcrt.dll msvcrt.old" (without the quote marks) then import the good version of the file back to the directory where you renamed the file. You should of course before doing all this, download the correct file to a spot on your computer where you know where it is. After the grand renaming ceremony you navigate to the newbie and write "copy msvcrt.dll c:\window\system" (if that is where it should be) Think thats the way to go and others here will correct me if I am wrong.
But the starting point is that you must open in DOS at Command Prompt.
    Cheers

The instructions I gave were for Windows 98. Windows ME and XP have no true DOS, just a command prompt running under the Windows OS. Not knowing what OS you are using, we can't tell you how to get where you want. In XP, you would choose Safe Mode With Command Prompt. And, the file you want is in C:\Windows\system32. You should be able to rename it, and replace it there.
Several other programs place that file in different places also. Like Nero, AVG, Ulead products, Macromedia Dreamweaver, and several games. But the one you need is in \Windows\system32 (for XP)

When I get into the Command Prompt at startup, it brings me to a screen where this is showing:

    C:\>

This is where I am getting stuck...I type in Windows\System (where the corrupt msvcrt.dll file is) and when I hit enter, it says Bad Command ot File Name.

I don't know if I'm doing it right.

And, yes I am using Windows98

I don't know how to "navigate to the appropriate file and rename it using the good old dos language"

    Re: Msdos---msvcrt.dll

BBJ, Make sure you have a fresh copy of msvcrt.dll ready before you start, downloaded off the net or copied from another PC. Keep that safe for the moment.

Fixing up/making your old copy of msvcrt.dll inactive.

In my W98SE, msvcrt.dll is not a read only file, therefore you can rename it in Windows.

    From Windows.

Start-->Find, enter msvcrt.dll. It should find it in C:\|windows\system directory/folder.
Right click on the file name, go down to rename.
Rename msvcrt.dll to msvcrtdll.dll or something similar.

msvcrt.old, if you like, but I prefer to keep the original suffix in case I forget what it was originally thus msvcrtdll.dll

Load your fresh copy of msvcrt.dll (Copy and paste, usually), into C:\Windows\System.

Everything should work then. Reboot to be sure that new one works.

After you are satisfied that all is OK, delete old copy of msvcrtdll.dll (or whatever you called it). Let us know. Bazza

Seems to be what everyone is missing. At the C:\> prompt, type cd windows\system

"cd" is the command to "change directory". If you only type the directory name, Windows thinks you are trying to run a program or command by that name. Once you get to the C:\windows\system prompt you can rename (ren) the file to something else (ren msvcrt.dll msvcrt.old), and then type copy a:\msvcrt.dll and it (the good one) will be copied to the directory you are currently in.
