Windows XP Pro issues message that the MSGINA.DLL file is not found and won't boot under any circumstances except from install cd. Attempted to rename file while in the recovery console so that I could restore it but I get the error message that the file is not found. Attempted to do Windows Repair and then a Reinstall but both isssue the message that they cannot copy MSGINA.DLL.

At this point all I want to do is get rid of the file. Any suggestions?

Does it start in Last Known Good Configuration, or does System Restore help?

Or if it starts in Safe Mode, you can try to either copy the file from CD, or download it, and install to your system32 folder.

    Or from Micro$$oft support,

    1. Use the Windows XP Setup start-up disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM to start your computer.
    2. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press R, and then press C to start the Recovery Console.
    3. Type the number for the appropriate Windows XP installation, and then type the Administrator account password.
    4. Type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each command:

    cd \
    cd windows\system32
    ren winlogon.exe winlogon.old
    ren msgina.dll msgina.old
    ren shell32.dll shell32.old
    ren shlwapi.dll shlwapi.old
    cd..
    cd servicepackfiles\i386
    copy MSGINA.DLL c:\windows\system32
    copy SHELL32.DLL c:\windows\system32
    copy WINLOGON.EXE c:\windows\system32
    copy SHLWAPI.DLL c:\windows\system32

Note If the DLL files are not in the Servicepackfiles folder, you must expand these files from the Windows XP installation CD-ROM and copy them to the System32 folder. To expand these files from the Windows XP installation CD, follow these steps:

    a. Put the Windows XP installation CD in your CD-ROM or DVD drive.
    b. Type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each command:

    expand CD_Drive_Letter:\i386\MSGINA.DL_ C:\windows\system32
    expand CD_Drive_Letter:\i386\SHELL.DL_ C:\windows\system32
    expand CD_Drive_Letter:\i386\WINLOGON.EX_ C:\windows\system32
    expand CD_Drive_Letter:\i386\SHLWAPI.DL_ C:\windows\system32
    cd\
    cd windows\system32
    ren *.dl_ *.dll
    ren *.ex_ *.exe

    5. Type exit, and then press ENTER.

Thanks for the information but I have tried all of those solutions. I believe that the MSGINA is corrupted and will not allow any access even by the XP Installer. Can't rename it, can't delete, copy or overlay. I was hoping that someone had a suggestion that would allow me to somehow delete or move the file. Would building a boot disk allow me to have more access to NTFS? Is there a way through the recovery console to physically wipe the directory entry? Assuming that would allow MSGINA to be restored.

The following site gave me the solution. My problem was with a bad file and I needed to boot to a DOS ennvrionment so that I could deal with it. Couldn't do that with the recovery console or at least didn't know how. Once booted with the disk I created using the NTFS4DOS utility I was alble to use CHKDSK to find and eleiminate any bad files including the bad MSGINS.DLL. I was then able to restore the file and boot to windows where I could continue to restore.

Thanks to all for the advice.
