MSN Messenger & IE Hangy and Sticky...

Yes, that's right. They're sticking. And this is a new comp.
I have WinXP Pro and it's set up on a P4 3.01GHz CPU w/1Gb RAM. My video card is the same old same old, an XFX NVidia GeForceFX 5200.

But the deal is, when I run MSN Messenger, it hangs up and stops responding, as does IE when I run it with MSNIM running. They sometimes resume their functioning, but most of the time I have to terminate them and reload them.
I've gotten rid of Windows Messenger and I've updated as much as I can... except I can't get SP1 or 2. But I'm up to date from there.

You can't get SP1 or SP2?

Load your processes list (task manager) and see if you have a processes called RESET5 listed.

 

No... there was one program that's eating up some memory called sapisrv.exe ...but no RESET5

you should also be on Sp2 at the least.. you're system is wide open to some very dangerous worms that affect pre sp2 systems.

 

Well it tells me that I can't get SP1 or SP2... anyway I got rid of the sapisrv.exe... I'm about to try it and see if it will hang again.

And I don't know how to circumvent this thing that's preventing me from getting the service packs.. but I've got AVG and Ad-Aware and Spybot.. so I think I'm safe.

how does SP2 fail?
make sure your drivers and bios are up to date.

I think it just doesn't like my XP... is there a way to bypass that stuff?
