    Hey there fellow Geekers.

Have been trawling through the log files on an unrelated matter. I noted that MSN messenger does an online defragmentation approximately every hour.

I have backups configured on the hour every hour, and other users at work also have msn installed.

Recently since the roll out of new p.c's, with MSN messenger installed, the network has taken a bit of a performance hit, so thought this may have something to so with it.

Can anyone please assist with what this online defragmentation actually does? Msn messenger is running on approx 20 units in a typing pool.

The event log shows the following trigger; on my p.c.

msnmsgr (2884) Online defragmentation is begining a full pass on database\ goes on to the path where the app msn is installed eventually ending with "my" msn account name and \sharing Metadata\Working database_64E4..etc\dfsr.db

Have been to the msn site for a bit, found nothing overly useful there regarding the online defragmentation, also tried a google nothing jumped out as valid info for this...

Help with this would be awesome... and thank you for taking the time to read this and posting a reply if you have any insghts to this one.

    Hi necro :)

I'm guessing this "msnmsgr (2884) Online defragmentation is begining a full pass on database ... sharing Metadata\Working database_64E4..etc\dfsr.db" is some kind of database feature that's happening on your networked PC's - just happens to be hitting the MSN/Live logs, possibly because they are being created and added to faster than the 'real' work that the maintenance app was created for?

Are these XP machines? Exchange or some other server Apps running?

    Hey there Satrow,

Yes, these are Xp machines and I have to admit some of the managed switches effects and automatic inventoring software left by former I.T is still a bit of an unkown to me at this time, more unfamiliar should I say.

There is Apache running in this and Exchange in this mess :-o of an I.T role, some good but mainly dissapointing documentation from former I.T - eg... I have just completed the first site map and this company's been trading for almost 20 years! - had no one to show me the ropes various netgear and cissco monstrosities, various p.c's used for firewalls and severs, really need a better platform / O.S than 2003 Small business, a bit limiting in the number of connections and not the best for the current working environment with two segments and basically files everywhere including the server.

At the switches there is no lables to say which unit is connected to which port there are several 24 port switches in the field with wires running through various offices...good grief...when I took the job with a total of now approx 100 pc's (my babies) to admin didnt know what what was going on with the infrastructure here...never mind, thankful to have a job in these tough times and it will be an adventure no doubt!

So thats the software windows small business server 2003 (sbs) its the servers platform / software, apache and exchange are thrown in for a good mix.

This online defrag irks me somewhat, not only are there 20 - 25 units doing this every hour its the extra little bits of bandwidth and potential security risks that I would like to stitch up...we use fiber optic for our internet connectivity, great for downloads but double edged sword, also means we can potentially get hacked and lose data a lot quicker too!

Anyways enough ranting if anyone has info on this, please advise of where info can be located, websitte link etc...:cool:wave

    Cheers Geekers

    MSN I.M Querry: please escalate..haha

    Hey there Geeks and Geek-ets,

I am wondering is there an application that monitors the MSN Messenger traffic?

Also I recently noted that on the Hour, seemingly every hour MSN I.M does an online defrag... has someone already read up on this, and has info? please.
I am unsure as to the reason for this msn i.m online defrag or if its a valid msn app... I really dont want any potential exploits or overheads on our network segments.

We only use msn for msn i.m messages across three separate typing pools. A Hotmail account was required - then the msn i.m was given by default.

Also is there a way to disable the marketing material that comes through msn i.m. Have copy and pasted, one of several links, seemingly sent from a valid user name in my contacts list. Although the notable thing is that the i.m sender is usually one short line - .. blah blah funny... blah blah lol etc with approx about 4 to 5 links.

The weired thing is the user which has sent the msn i.m with the links in it is currently offline...go visit the user and they are online..and are totaly unaware of the issue, even though the i.m used (apparently) that users account details. It is somewhat like the valid i.m account has been potentially linked (maybe not the right term) / exploited and the users account then used to fwd'd the mail with links to another account.../ really unsure.. at this i am too busy and havent been able to invest alot of brainpower in this at this time.

I did discover a link at the bottom of the conditions / agreement form for using i.m to sign out from the advertising material, although i will wait a fortnight or so to verify that this isnt getting i.m'd to my account still with links in it...Sorry for the rant..hope this last paragraph also helps someone else..

Thanks for any assistance:cool with this / these querries.:wave
