ok, msn was working fine. then i got this virus which disabeled NIS.

    1. now i cannot uninstall NIS because when i go to uninstall it says i need to open NIS, and it won't open because i think the virus screwed with it.

so i got rid of the virus (trojan actually), so NIS is still disabeled but unable to uninstall.

any ideas on how to get it to uninstall ?

    2. I cannot log onto MSN messenger, i get the '0x81000370 error'. a google search on that error brings up many problems and answers but as of yet none have worked.

I cant even log on to hotmail, or anything with my '.net passport'. neither can I register for a new passport. it always goes to 'page cannot be displayed'

Oh and trillian doesn't work either

    please help...

    My sympathies,

I think the sum of your problems may necessitate reformating and a clean install. Back up personal files first of course. But I will bow to any better advice from the real pros on 'ere. Pending better advice and after you reformat I recommend that you get rid of Norton and install Avast and Spybot and Ad Aware plus a firewall like Zone Alarm or Kerio. The basic and quite comprehensive versions are FREE and all available here on MG.
Hope you can get it all together again.

I Guess download and install AVAST antivir and run it to ensure you are free from virus. As to Norton - you will have to dig it out by deleting all the files associated with it on your hard drive then searching for and deleting entries in Registry (a very hairy businness). I had a similar problem when using W98SE awhile ago and it was not an easy task. REG Cleaner(the free version no longer available) helped but I finished up saving registry, searching for Symantec and or Norton and deleting the entries that appeared. In the event I did not have to reinstall the saved registry and was not troubled after - but after it all I wondered why I did not bite the bullet, back up , and Format.
    Hope you are succesfull

ok, so i have deleted all of the nortan files and registry files as described in the nortan support site.

    looks alright,

YAY I CAN LOG ONTO MSN AGAIN, looks like it was all because of nortan.

    thanx for the help guys.

only thing is when i switch on my pc before windows loads i get messages syaing the symantic files have been deleted and i need to uninstall or reinstall.

i think this is to do with the registry.

any ideas on how to stop those messages, or programs that will do that ?

Norton caused me loads of probs, so im staying clear of norton in future.... as for the registry bit, you could try RegCleaner available here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html

This is because there are remnants of Norton remaining at Startup. I use a program called Startman - no longer generally available but was here last time i looked. http://www.pt.lu/comnet/desc/startman.html - Startman - reports on ALL startup items including those hidden. Those not actually required can be quickly disabled - if an item is mistakenly disabled it is easy to re-enable it.

    Hope this helps

i dont think the problem is to do with the startup programs (and i have removed the nortan stuff from there anyway)

what i get is: "the windows registry or system.INI file refers to this device file. But the device no longer exists, please uninstall or reinstall the device"

and i dont think its the registry becuase i used easy cleaner to remove all the things from the regisry that were no longer on my hard drive. So i figure it must be the system.ini file, so how would i go about cleaning/fixing/changing that to get rid of the nortan device files.
