MSPaint can't open bitmaps

Awhile back our bitmap files got re-assigned to a different program. Today I re-associated them with MSPaint. However, when I double-click on a bitmap icon, I get the following error message:

C:\My.bmp was not found.

This looks to me like the program is having trouble with the file path. But how do I fix it? Is it in the registry?

We are running Windows 98 with the included version of Paint. I will post more detailed information on our system if it's needed.

When you set the association it must have set the wrong file path, namely C:\My.bmp.

I haven't used 98 for a while, but you will need to go into Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options (or whatever 98 calls it), then the File Types tab and scroll down to BMP and change the parent program and file path in there.

As I said I don't use 98 so cannot give exact steps, but that is the basic method.

If all else fails you could uninstall then reinstall paint which should reset the associations.

I looked at the file association tab again (in Windows 98 it's under Folder Options, under the View tab in Windows Explorer). I don't see a way to specify the file path. The parent program, yes, but not the file path.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks again.

Maybe I didn't specify exactly what to do.


There should be a change button there (there is in XP and there would be similar in 98)

Then just browse to Micro$$oft Paint's executable and make sure the checkbox "Always use this program" is checked.

If not, just delete .BMP, then create it again. There should be a New or Add, and you will have to specify the file path to Paint's executable.
