What OS are you using if it is XP/ME you could have used System Restore to go back to before Norton was installed ( you will loose data/info saved inbetween that period and today so backup )

you could try using the Norton removal tool as its well known to leave files on your pc even after you have un-installed it.

failing that if its a 9x windows version run SFC ( system file checker ) or if XP sfc /scannow ( xp goto start > run and type the bold bit and hit enter )

you will need your windows CD

i did it in safe mode i think. see my girl tried to install windows xp a while back but it would never complete. it would get stuck in the middle. so when ever we turn on the pc it ask if we want to continue with xp setup. since we cant we select exit setup. anyway i pressed f8 and chose safe mode and it gave me the same screen witha blue safe mode at the bottom. but when i windows loads it dosent have the 4 corner safe mode. dont know if it should. so i extracted files in to windows system i still get the msvcrt.dll error for everything except internet explore

Error Message "MSVCIRT.DLL file is linked to missing export MSVCRT.DLL:??_U@YAPAXI@Z" after installing Norton SystemWorks 2001 under Windows Me and then restarting

    Solution.

Note : The text enclosed in this table was copied from the symantec web site.

Error: "MSVCIRT.DLL file is linked to missing export MSVCRT.DLL" after installing Norton SystemWorks 2001 under Windows Me and then restarting

    Situation:
After installing Norton SystemWorks 2001 under Windows Me and then restarting, you see the following error messages:
    - MSVCIRT.DLL file is linked to missing export MSVCRT.DLL:??_U@YAPAXI@Z
    - x:\Norton SystemWorks\Norton CleanSweep\csinsm32.exe A device attached to the system is not functioning

    Solution:
Msvcrt.dll and Msvcirt.dll are shared files that are frequently updated or overwritten with older versions by software installations. This can result in mismatched .dll versions, which results in error messages. To solve this problem, restore a copy of the Msvcrt.dll file from your Windows Me installation files by using the System Configuration Utility.

    To restore the Msvcrt.dll file
    1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog appears.
    2. Type msconfig in the Open box, and then press Enter. The System Configuration Utility appears.
    3. Click Extract file. The Extract dialog appears.
    4. Type msvcrt.dll and then click Start. The Extract File dialog appears.
    5. In the Restore from box, type the location of your Windows Millennium installation files. The default location is C:\Windows\Options\Install, though in some cases they will be located in the C:\Windows\Options\Cabs folder.
    6. Type c:\windows\system in the Save file in box, and then click OK. The Backup File dialog appears.

NOTE: If you installed Windows to a different location, then substitute the appropriate path.

    7. Click OK to accept the default backup folder. You will be returned to the System Configuration Utility.
    8. Click OK. You will be prompted to restart the computer.
