Everytime I go to shut down xp, i get a message telling me that "magellan mswheel.exe" program is not responding. Then, i need to end it now before XP shuts down.

I gather from googling that this is a program is used to facilitate microsoft mice? I have had a labtec wireless mouse for a year or so now but have only recently encountered this problem. So this mswheel application surely isn't connected with my mouse?

Is there a way I can delete the damn thing as i believe i don't need it?

    thanks

If you go to the device manager does it show more than one mouse? If it does delete all of them and then reboot - the PC will then (hopefully) just detect your logitech mouse.

I tried that and I still get the message at every shut down.

Anyone else got ideas? this is annoying.

A simple answer might be to run search for the offending program, find the file folder it comes from and delete it, then run CCleaner and clean your register and program files. That should get rid of the problem. CCleaner is available at MG here

If none of the above work you can try this little trick. It worked for me in a similar situation.

    1. R-click My Computer
    2. Properties
    3. Under the Advanced Tab click Environment Variables.
    4. Under System Variables click New
    a. variable: devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices
    b. value: 1
    5. Click OK, then OK again
    6. Open Device Manager
    7. Click View and choose Show Hidden Devices

Then expand the mouse option and see if the other mouse shows up...if so right click and delete it.

    Good Luck! :)

I've tried searching for it but it doesn't come up.

The situation in device manager is this...

    Under mice etc, I have

    HID Compliant mouse

    and

    NX-pad

I need the HID compliant mouse as when i delete it, my wireless mouse doesn't work. I can delete NX-PAD but it automatically installs again when i reboot. This is probably the laptop mouse pad. deleting either of these does not fix the problem. i still get the magellan mswheel.exe is not responding message and requiring me to end it now before i can shut down.

There are no different hidden devices that are causing this.

Thanks for the help so far, any more?

It is the Microsoft Intellipoint software for their brand of mice. It is intended to be located in the system 32 folder. If you are NOT using an intellipoint mouse, then first uninstall the software (if any), and then delete the .exe file if it still exists. Then use a registry cleaner to search for any stray entries left behind in the registry.

I can't find that software in that folder or anywhere else infact. I've tried searching for "mswheel" "intellipoint". Nothing is found. So I can't find the .exe to delete it. Any tips on finding it? I also ran CCleaner and it still happens.

Have you tried Tools/ Folder Options/View Show hidden files uncheck two boxs below show hidden files Warning message check okay then search for your files in System 32, just reverse procedure to hid files again. Hope that helps ramage316

I tried that. I then searched for mswheel and still i get no findings. It's strange because it must be somewhere.

Try to download "security Task manager" and see all the info about the application!
    If you use either...
    Microsoft IntelliPoint 2.0
    Microsoft IntelliPoint 2.0a
    Microsoft IntelliPoint 2.1
    Microsoft IntelliMouse 1.0
    Microsoft IntelliMouse Trackball 1.0
    - They might have been installed with your mouse. The mswheel.exe is automaticlly installed and run when ever you use the mouse wheel!

    Check out

!! YOU MUST READ YOUR MOUSE MANUAL BECUASE MSWHEEL.EXE IS A REQUIRED PROGRAM FOR INTELLIPOINT MICE!!

By downloading security task manager, i was able to track down where this app. was coming from. I've quarantined it and i now no longer get the message at shut down. My wireless LABTEC mouse is still fully functional. Thanks very much!

    Program files>Apoint2k

In the above folder. Not sure what it is. But that is where security task manager told me mswheel.exe was.
