    Hey guys.

About a week ago, I had to fix my cousins computer. It was TRASHED with spyware. There was 620 files that adaware picked up, not to mention VX2!!

So I fixed it all up, and it was running better than ever. A week later (today) I get a call that he was on the computer, on the net (www.msn.com) when the computer just shut off. He went to power it back on, and right after the Xp Logo boot screen, a bsod flashes, and it attempts to reboot again - The same thing just keeps happening.

He can boot up from the CD-ROM, but can't in safe mode. This is because when he hits F8 - Safe mode is not listed.

I made him boot up the XP CD and tried to repair/reinstall. But he doesn't get a normal window. It's asking him to choose a partition to INSTALL XP on. He has:

    :partition 1 FAT 30MB
    C:\Unknown 57208MB

So I said what the help, and we hit enter on the second partition. Well it started to reformat. Before it got to any percent we pulled the plug.

So than I tried to use the recovery console. In the console I typed in:

chkdsk /r - It got to 26% and stated that there were 1 or more errors which cannot be recovered.

chkdsk /p - It got to 35% and stated that there were 1 or more errors which cannot be recovered.

He doesn't care if he needs to buy a new computer. His main concern is he has tons of pictures of his family, and newborn son that he HIGHLY wants to save. Is there anyway from the recovery console, I can type in a command so we can get into safe mode just to AT LEAST back up those files?

And if you guys have any ideas on how to get it up and running, those are welcome too! But we at least want to get to save those pictures.

    By the way . . . his computer is a Dell . . . go figure . . .

    Any help is appreciated.

    Here's his system configuration:

    Xp Home
    P4 1.8
    256 Ram
    60Gig WD HDD

Can you not remove the hard drive and try it as a slave on your PC? Copy the files to your hard drive.

If the worst comes to the worst, there are a lot of professional data recovery services out there. Let your fingers...

From what I am hearing I would buy a new hard drive. Make this one the slave. Reinstall Windows on the new drive and hopefully you will have access to this other drive assuming it has not already been damaged or was on the way out, which is a possibility at this point. IMHO, the way it sounds, the more you tinker with this drive, the better the odds of trashing it. Get hima CDR while at the store, and show him how to back up to CD :)

Yea, new drive would be my best bet.

If he has another system in the house with Win ME on it, could we slave it in that system, back up the piuctures, then take it from there? Or does the other OS have to be XP?

    Thanks

    Jnick
