Hi All, I am COMPUTER CHALLENGED but I will try to expain my dilema. I had a friend build my computer about five years ago. I was trying to free up space and I deleted my Multimedia audio Controller device and I do not have any sound at all. Here are my computer stats:

    Motherbd Chipset Intel Springdale i865PE

Great car! I am just learning my way around majorgeeks. This is the first time I have ever gotten help off the internet. Prior to this I had my guy friend come and fix my messes. I am so proud of myself that with your help the problem was fixed.

I do not think I am ready to build my own computer but I would like to know how I go about updating the one I have. How do I find out if things are working or there is a new and improved something that I can add to enhance what I already have? All info would be greatly appreciated.

I'll go down the list for you, but you will probably need to post a new thread to get some REAL info.
It is important to know if the Hardware you want to add to your system is compatible. Any questions you have on what will go with your system or how-to's would make a good thread. There are lots of folks here, that love to help answering any question you might have.

    OK, here we go.
OS: Always make sure that you have the newest recommended and important WIndows updates.
Drivers: Usually you don't need to update them, as long as your PC is not experiencing the troubles the update fixes. You can update drivers in Device Manager by clicking on the device and choosing update.
HDD's: Newer disk drives are faster and larger. They are not that hard to install yourself. Price depends on how big, and how fast you want to go. You can also add an external HDD, usually as simple as plugging in a USB.
Sound Cards: Again, easy. A sound card can greatly improve your audio. Inexpensive ones can provide great sound, if you choose the right one.
Processors (CPU): This can make your PC faster, able to multi-task better, and also heat up your PC more. Fans and heatsinks are something to look into if you add a processor. Can be pricy.
RAM: This is simple to add, can also improve your PC's performance quite a bit, and is not expensive. You really need to be sure that you add the right type.
Video Card: If you game or watch a lot of movies on your PC these will make a difference. Not hard to install, but some can be costly.

For info on what is in your PC, this will help:
    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
There are others here also: PcWizard (my favorite), SIW, Belarc are a few.

Just maintaining you system with some simple steps will keep it running good, too.

Also, heat can effect your PC. Dust builds up on your fans, heatsink, and vents cutting down airflow.
A can of compressed gas can blow all that away. You only need to unplug your PC and open the case and blow it away. I do mine outside because there can be a lot of dust.

I hope that helps you out some. Basically, doing it yourself will save lots of money.
And again, just start a new thread for a question or questions that you may need detailed answers on.
