I'm at the end of my rope.

    What happened:
I reinstalled windows xp on an HP Pavilion 743g desktop.
I downloaded and installed drivers from HP
I dowloaded from RealTek, Intel and HP for the audio drivers

What keeps happening over and over and over and....
    I go to device manager
Right click on Mulitmedia Audio Controller and "Update Driver"
It looks really good when the files start to transfer....
A notice pops up saying, "This driver is not digitally signed for Microsoft Logos....it's not recommended you continue.....blah.."
    I continue anyway.
It goes for a little while longer and then...
the system reboots itself, and I'm back to square one.

I've been hunting through the threads all day....well....technically it's day 3...but who's counting....?
    I've tried:
    downloading chipset then audio
    updating driver in device manager
uninstalling and attempting to reinstall the device
so many things I can't think of all of them

    I'm so stuck. Help...? Please...

I've attached all the scans I've done from Belarc and Everest.

You say you re-installed XP.... was it a safe repair install, or did you do a clean format install? If a safe install, then you probably have something buried in there causing some type of problem. Boot in safe mode and uninstall any/all sound drivers that you may have already installed. Run CCleaner on the hard drive and registry (you can this in normal mode probably). Search thourgh the hard drive and remove any folders/files that may be leftover from any previous sound driver installs. Then download this diver:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=215498&os=228&lang=en
HP says it's an 'update' but it's really a full driver, but it has been updated. After you download it, DO NOT install it! Use WinRAR or TUGzip to extract it (right click and use the WinRAR/TUGzip options to extract it to a folder). Then go into your Device Manager, right click on the audio device and select uninstall. Then reboot. When XP loads up it will detect the audio device and will prompt for the driver. Click 'Have Disk' and point the wizard to the extracted folder. If you get prompted about the driver being unsigned, continue anyway. When it's all done, reboot. That should do it!

    Good luck!

(TUGzip (freeware) http://www.majorgeeks.com/TUGZip_d4670.html when installing, click 'Next' all the way through until the last screen where you'll see a 'Finish' button; click on 'Select All' before clicking 'Finish' so you'll be able to extract all the different formats)
    (WinRAR ($hareware) http://www.majorgeeks.com/WinRAR_d524.html)

Thanks for your response DLB! If by "clean format install," you mean did I wipe the hard drive all together....delete partitions and everything, then yes.

I had to walk away for a bit while I still had some hair left...heh. But I'm back on it and am going to try your solution now. I have to hook up the problematic pc....I'll post results, and thank you for the luck, I need it!

    Well, dlb...here's what happened.

I downloaded and ran CCleaner on everything.
    I downloaded TUGzip and WinRAR.
I deleted RealTek and Intel files from hard drive.
I uninstalled the Multimedia Audio Controller

Then I went and downloaded the driver...didn't open it and extracted it with TUGzip to its own folder.

Just as you said upon reboot, it prompted to install the "new hardware." I selected "Have Disk," but I wasn't sure to point it at the "WDM" or "Source." The source file seemed to be empty, so I went with WDM. There were three to choose from so I picked one.

I was looking great...everything happened just the way you said, and then....
it got to the end...my spybot flashed something right before it rebooted itself. Again, after the reboot I got " your system has recovered from a serious error...blah, blah..."

Not sure what to do or where to go next, but I still have hope!

    Good morning, again.

If you haven't guessed...I'm not a computer genius...heh. However, here's what I'm going to try next.

I saved the extracted driver file to a disk, and when I say have disk I'm going to point it to that.

I disabled my spybot (just incase), and I'm going to run through the steps dlb posted again.

If that doesn't work, I think I'm going to try to wipe and reinstall windows again. Is that advisable?

    Thanks, again.

    Update:

Wiped and reinstalled XP. The first thing I did was to attempt to install the audio driver. The same thing happened. I'm lost.... Help?

Did you remember to install your chipset drivers, before the audio?

I'm back at it on day 4. I'm going to unistall everything I see in safe mode that has anything to do with mulitmedia audio. I will leave codecs and legacy as they are.

In regards to the chipset drivers, I'm attaching a list of all the drivers for this pc. There is no chipset...I think it was automatically installed with the XP reinstall.... The only other driver I had to install was the graphics card - everything else works.

I appreciate the responses so much! The lovely lady to whom this pc belongs thanks you as well. =)

Thanks again, and I will post results.

Ok....so I neglected to attach the listed drivers, and now I can't attach, so here's the link

Download the i845GL Chipset drivers _and_ the Application Accelerator from here; http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-009236.htm
Graphics driver is there as well if you require it.

    My #7 Post above should have read;

    :celebrate
    1. Booted in safe mode using f8 key.
    2. While in safe mode deleted all audio files EXCEPT Codecs and Legacy from device manager.
    3. While in safe mode searched through all folders and deleted all "Realtek" files (they were in a few places).
    4. Rebooted Windows normally.
    5. Went to http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...&OSFullName=Windows* XP Professional&lang=eng
(the correct driver was already up there - you rock, Dan!) and installed the Intel chipset driver.
    6. Restarted computer.
    7. Downloaded file extractor from http://www.majorgeeks.com/TUGZip_d4670.html (you rock, dlb!)
    8. Created generic folder on desktop to extract driver to.
    9. Downloaded zip file from Dan's post #5 at http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=161055
    10. Unzipped using TUGzip which I installed in (7.) to the generic folder I created on the desktop - I did NOT open it!
    11. Went back into device manager and uninstalled Mulitmedia Audio Controller.
    11.5 RESTARTED COMPUTER
    12. Upon restart Windows automatically prompted the New Found Hardware Wizard (just as dlb said it would).
    13. Ticked "no, not this time," next
    14. Ticked "install from a list or special location," next
    15. Ticked "don't search. I will choose," next
16 Clicked "Have Disk" and "browse for folder I created."
17 Browsed for the folder I created on my desktop, selected and clicked, "Install"
    18. Pooped in my pants just a little.
    19. Watched as the papers floated from folder to folder.
    20. It EFFFING WORKED!!!!!!!
    21. Listening to Leonard Cohen's "hallelujah"

Thank you dlb and to Dan(putting the links to the files is what saved me) and also to Musksnipe - if you hear
the same thing from 3 major geeks...check to make sure you did it!!!
The safe mode steps and restarts were key.
