Multiple Copies of E-mail in Outlook

I recently switched a WinXP machine with Outlook 2002 SP-2 from a dialup to DSL. In Outlook, the only change I made was to route the outgoing server to the DSL ISP. Now when I receive e-mails, I receive three copies. There are three IDs in Outlook using the same POP3 server. However, that was the same when I used the dialup and I was not receiving 3 copies of each e-mail.

I have increased the server time, ensured that all IDs are not leaving files on the server.

Microsoft site is completely unhelpful on this topic so would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

    Thanks in advance ...

    Hello
When I had the same problem in Outlook Express, deleting and re-creating each account solved it for me.
For Outlook you may find your solution here: http://www.sperrysoftware.com/Outlook/Outlook-Duplicates.asp#Q1

"This page contains answers to common problems about Microsoft Outlook duplicates, where they come from, and how to avoid them. All of the information contained pertains to Microsoft Outlook, not Outlook Express. To find out more, including the differences between Outlook and Outlook Express and how to find out which one you use, see our general FAQ.

This page is broken up into two parts, how to prevent the duplicates from occurring in the first place and how to clean up the duplicates."

    Hope it helps!

Thanks for the advice ... however, nothing worked. I'm really confused on this one. Usually I can figure something out. Does anyone else have some suggestions?

    Thanks again ...

    Hi,

I don't know if this will help, but I run a similar set up to you, with three separate email accounts (one BT and two Freeserve) all having their mail collected by Outlook and routed to my inbox. I don't understand why you would have three ID's to the same account, though. I have set up a filter in Outlook to automatically route any email my wife gets in the BT account domain into a separate folder within Outlook, so I only have one ID for each account, although the accounts have more than one address at each domain that can have email sent, if that makes sense.

So I did a test by creating a copy of my BT account in Outlook with the same settings but a different name and email address (same domain) and, guess what, I got two copies of a test email back, which seems to replicate your problem.

I have no idea why Outlook wasn't doing this when you were on dial-up, but I suggest that each of your email ID's is now getting the same email.

    Hope this helps.

Interesting ... My wife runs an Internet business. So she has three e-mail IDs -- one for customer service, one for promotions, and an all purpose e-mail. This is no different than and ISP allowing 5/6 e-mail addresses for each member. SO, not sure why each address is getting the same e-mail sent to only one of the addresses.

Is it possible that there is a bug in Outlook OR am I more likely dealing with a setup problem? Anybody else with a suggestion?

    Hi again,

I realise from the tone of your last post that you are looking for someone else to respond, but if your wife has three separate email addresses off her one domain (which is exactly how I run mine) and the email addresses are all run as aliases off the main email address of the account, then as far as your ISP is concerned, you have just one account with a number of aliases, not a separate account for each alias. Which is why you might be getting repeated emails.

But hey, what do I know, I'm probably wrong.

Finally, one thing you could check in Outlook.

If you click on Tools\Email Accounts then select the "View or Change Existing email accounts" radio button, then click "Next", you should see listed all the accounts that Outlook can access, which should be your three accounts. Close that menu by repeatedly clicking "Cancel".

Now go into Tools\Send/Receive Settings\Define Send/Receive Groups and you should see only one Group called "All Accounts". Select that group, click on "Edit" And you'll see a list of all the accounts in that Group on the LH side of the window. If the account has a red cross, it is not included in the group, it will not be in the Send/Receive; if it has a blue "in and out" arrow, it is included in the Group. Again, you come out of this window by repeatedly clicking "Cancel". Repeat this check for every Group if you find more than one.

In doing both of these checks, you need to make sure you only have each e-mail account active in one active group - if you have more than one active group with the same email account showed as active within each group, you could get multiple collections.

Thanks for the input ... I'll give it a try. I believe they are all in one group. But maybe "multiple" groups were created when I set up the DSL. Confusing but what the heck ... I've had worse happen.

Sorry, did not mean to offend; just wasn't sure if your situation was identical to mine.

    Thanks again ...

I'd probably also check if there are any similar/repeating Rules, if you have any.

I have exactly same settings and had exactly same problems.
I have 3 email accounts with same domain but different alias. One being master user account, one personal, one for business only. And they were duplicating emails when I swiched to cable isp.
What I did - (may not be YOUR solution tho...)
Deleted all accounts from Outlook & outlook express.
Make sure your ISP connection settings are correct.
    Updated OS.
Reconfigured/reset my accounts with Express. (At this point, no more dups)
Finally, imported all settings and mail to Outlook.
Now my accounts work just fine as usual.

Don't ask why. Nothing else worked. But above steps did the job.
