Multiple Operating Systems

I have been working with computers since I was about 5 years old (19 now) so I know quite a bit about computers, just now mastering networking. Anyways, I have never tried using more than one OS at a time and lately I have been curious about Linux.

I love WinXP but I want to try Linux. I am also taking an Operating Systems class @ College in which we will be discussing Windows, Linux, and Unix.

Earlier today there was a 'club fest' outside one of the buildings on campus. I found a club, CIA (Computer Information Association). They gave me Linux Knoppix and Ubuntu v5.04 Live. I want to try out both of the Linux OSes but I also want to keep WinXP, how would I go about doing this? (By the way, I run Windows Media Center Edition -- XP basically)

 

Knoppix and I am assuming Ubutnu live distros run off of CD, so you wouldnt have to worry about it.

 

You were right. I tried them both and I have to say Knoppix SUCKS! However, I love Ubuntu and I am currently downloading the permanent install.

Problem is, how can I have both Ubuntu and Windows Media Center Edition (XP) installed and switch between them on start-up?

Shadow_Puter_Dude lays out some excellent instructions on dual booting. probably the friendliest you'll find.

good luck with Linux. I've been running Fedora Core 4 for a bit now and i really enjoy it.

it's a whole different beast than Microsoft OS's but it's worth it if you like to tinker, and i have heard lots of good things about Ubuntu. Hope you enjoy it
