    Hi all

I have a slight dilemma that I hope you can help me with.

I am in the process of setting up a new pc for my son to do his schoolwork on using MS Office 2000. I am not naive, however, and realise that it will be used more for games than work.

My dilemma is do I install win98se for the faster gaming ability, XP pro for the enhanced memory management, or both ?

Secondly if I decide to install both do I need to install hardware drivers and software (Progs or games) twice to use them on both platforms ?

I am sure that plenty of you guys have been through this scenario so I would truly appreciate your help.

    CPU is XP2000+
    HD is Seagate 60GB
    CD/RW
    DVD
    64MB graphics (onboard)
    768mb DDR ram

I think you have enough CPU to do games. It sounds like you should attempt to do it all on one install of XP based on your specs. You can always add in another OS later if needed.

As for drivers, each Operating System you install are truly independent of each other, so yes, you will need drivers for each. In the case of 98 and XP, almost always, each will use a different driver, requiring seperate downloads.

We game heavily here. You do not need Win98 so save yourself some time and trouble. Just use XP.
You have enough CPU for good gaming. If you want to reward him at some time for good grades, a video card would really help the games.

The problem now is that some of his games won't run on XP. This means he will not be able to play some of his favourite games (like RR Tycoon 2) so I will have to buy some others that will hopefully placate him, or use only Win98 if I don't go back to the 2 OS setup idea.

Yep - Unfortunately it doesn't work for certain games - RRTycoon2 and NFS Road Challenge are 2 that come to mind.

Well if apps don't work in XP, then a dual boot is best.

You will have to install apps and drivers x2, once for each OS.

I really can't condone running a 9x OS by itself, it just makes me feel dirty. Besides, you want stability and long uptime, right?

NFS is not currently installed on my computer, but I have a friend running some version of it under XP

has forums to post on how to do it.
RRTycoon should run as well, or you can just get RRTycoon 3
Dual booting has never been a stable solution for avid gamers around here.
For geeks that know what to avoid and how to repair the problems it works well enough. But for a personal computer you need a very compelling reason to dual boot.
