Multiple Routers?

Hello all, after my desktop pc decided to just turn it's self on and boot up to the windows password screen, I started to think about security again.
Let me just say, I know that if I switched on my wifi it would take about two minutes for the first of my many nosy neighbors to have his nose into my router, and start downloading films using my broadband. So wifi is switched well off and left alone.
After my pc powered up on it's own, I made sure the boot options in the motherboard was set to cd drive and hard drive only. I'm guessing that my new ISP's adsl router is not safe at all, so I dug out an old cable router and have LAN'd them together, using the old router as a second line of defense.

Ok, here's the question; using my old router, kind of like a lan hub, my pc will now benefit from it's password and firewall etc; right? Or is it just an un protected pass through from lan cable to lan cable, as in a normal unprotected hub?

    Thank's for your help, advice.

All you have to do is harden your ISP's router security.

You're PC have WOL (wake on lan) enabled? Did you have a power 'glitch' and your PC is set to return the previous power state? All settings in (some) BIOS. You don't have encryption on your wifi? That should keep people out. If the old router's firewall is not turned off. What about your current router? it does not have any protections? Have any old PCs around you could run Smoothwall or IPCop on if you want a project.
If you want to make it a little harder turn off the ssid broadcast, turn off DHCP & static all your devices (not using the default 192.168.1), use MAC filtering on the router (if it is an option), disable UPNP on the PC and router (if it is an option).
I know there are ways around all these but security through obscurity does work if you're not going up against the like of Neo.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes I have done, but I can't change the password, as the internet connection is so bad the isp has to have constant access to the router; which they re set trying to get a better signal.

Fine ... call them and tell them you need to reset your password because neighbors are piggybacking it.

Wol is off. Pc was turned off as I was watching tv.
    192.168.1 changed on old router.
Neo lives across the road and his brothers up the road and cousins down the road, which is one reason why no wifi.
I never did understand why people would willingly sit in front of a microwave oven with the door off, especially when a lan connection is just inch's away from them.

    Thanks for your reply.

Thanks, but the problem really isn't wifi. I guess I'll have to download and read the routers user manual to see if the lan connections have a firewall between each connection.

    Thanks.
