Ok, so i have a big time problem, my friend gave me her Sharp Notebook Computer to improve the running of and update. I did the usual, defrag, scan disk, all found small issues but all sorted themselves out, i also re-sized her partitions (30gb drive now 15gb each C & D) all of this caused NO issue as it was restarted several times to prove this was the case. Next i went into updates, she didnt have XPSP2 (home edition) so i downloaded and ran that, it processed it as usual then went for the restart, thats where it stopped.
After watching black screen for about 5 mins i hit the power and re-started, options for safe mode flash up, booting normally gets a flash of disk activity then no-where, booting in safe mode reveals that the system is halting on 'WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Mup.sys' having googled this ive found other people had the same problem, they ran recovery console from the xp cd. Bad news, this thing doesnt have a working cd or floppy drive and the bios does not allow for boot to USB devices

    Specs are as follows:
    AMD Athlon XP
    256mb RAM
    30gb hdd
    Ran fine with winxp sp1
    NO CD OR FLOPPY DRIVE

Any one got a clue how in heck i can fix this without telling my mate 'its screwed'?
    Thanks in advance,
    TRP

Not really off hand. But, why did you partition that 30 gig drive to two seperate partitions?

Also, did you check out this:

    http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/97354.html

Another thing, anyone, who posts suggestions on how to fix this may be the same link you have been to through google. So, be patient with us, because we may suggest something you have already done!

Just a couple of questions. How did the original owner install XP, if the cdrom does not work? Is it the disc itself, or is the reader?

If a USB floppy drive (if FAT32 filesystem) or a USB cdrom drive is no help, and the cdrom drive that is part of the computer does not work.....then you MAY...no gaurantee, be able to use a 3.5" converter to 5 1/2". Use this to boot to that drive using the repair option. Never tested this myself.

Typically before I touch a machine I will make an image of the hard drive. Then any changes I did wastes the machine, I can always go back to square one. Hard lesson this is, I have learned. :|

I was only resizing what was done by sharp when they built it orriginally, OS is on C documents are now on D partition (which was previously unused but for data protection i moved them all incase of something like this), I am not sure how they did the install but i know the cd drive itself is the faulty part, it see's cd, spins them but does nothing with them, putting a bootable cd in gets the sharp bios to read the cd but no further (windows did simular when it was working), have tried with several cd's, from XP Pro to a cd emulated win98se floppy.

I've read in detail most of the links from google for mup.sys and mup.sys boot failure, its slightly confusing that different people have different sollutions, i am currently going on the hardware path, ive removed ram, cmos battery etc for a period of 24 hours, i will update on results later.

I am yet to try usb floppy or anything like that as i dont have access to them currently, i shall, when i return home have access to usb floppy, cd drive and 40gb external drive, if i can get it to boot to cd i'll use Powerquest drive image to get all data onto the usb hard drive =)

Unfortunatly time was an issue, so i neglected to do a backup before starting work, mistake noted and regretted :(

Thanks again for your on going support,
    TRP

whey! got SP2 off the machine (using usb floppy and 6floppys to get to recovery console!) it still doesnt boot >_< and still seems to fail at mup.sys, in safe mode it stops there, in boot normal i see the logo and loading bar (green for home - sp1 i think) for a few secconds then nothing... at all

i begin to get the feeling this thing was fated before i even saw it!

I thought you couldn't use a USB device as a bootable device? If so, then you should be able to use a USB cdrom to do a repair on the OS.

I didnt think i could, i didnt have access to one then, i do now and it doesnt register, not to boot from anyway, under Recovery Console it appears and you can view listed content of cd's, not too usefull as you cant do anything with the files on it, about the only thing i can think of doing is replacing mup.sys, i run winxp pro sp2, its not going to be sensible to throw a copy of that into the drivers folder after uninstalling sp2 at the recovery console is it?

ideally i need a bootable floppy that will allow me access to a usb cd drive >_< any idea's? (from cd i can use drive image and such to get documents off and then consider a re-format)

ok, old topic i know but this problem STILL hasnt shifted, issue after issue are presenting themselves, i was given a bootable floppy with usb and pcmcia drivers on it, it doesnt find any of the drives (cd or usb hdd) i connect to the pc, using the pcmcia drivers ive tried pcmcia cd drive, it says the slot isnt configured >_< which when it used to house a wireless adapter i find hard to believe, any idea's on a fix?
