I'm trying to burn some music from my PC to a CD. Tried several different programs, different CD's, and I'm still unable to play them back on my stereo CD player. What am I doing wrong. Please help!

It is probably your CD player. Some older models won't recognize a CD-R. Try it in a differentt player. I'm assuming you are burning the songs as an audio CD, as opposed to MP3 files. You would need a CD player with MP3 reader capability (most newer units can). They are all clearly marked with file and media types they play, if not, it's just a plain-jane CD player.

Also, if you are burning them as MP3's to use in your MP3-compatible player, the CD still needs to be 'finalized', the same as a regular audio CD.

Thanks for your replies. I burned my CD's on CD-RW and in MP3 mode. My CD player is an older model, but my brother burned some CD's for me with his external CD burner, and I can play them in my stereo. But the CD's I burn, the CD player does not even recognize, that there is a cd in the player. Awaiting for further suggestions.

For a start, audio CD's need to be Redbook standard compliant in order to play them on all CD players. That means you need to use a CD-RW or CD-R drive. NOT a DVD-R CD-RW drive. They produce too many errors to be redbook complaint.

Also, you need to burn it in CD Audio mode. Nero works well. Your brother will have burned the CDs in this way. In nero, when you open a project simply select the CD Audio mode. You can copy MP3s to the drive, and it will automatically convert them to WAV files which can be burn to an AUDIO cd. It will also burn a Redbook compliant TOC and leadin-out automagically. ;)

First of all, did you finalize the CD's you burned? This means the software doing the burning 'closed off' the CD, so that even if there's space left on it, nothing else can be burned onto it. This has to be done for a regular CD player to recognize the CD. It's normally done by default by programs such as Nero when burning audio CD's, but must be done manually when burning data files, such as MP3's.

Did your brother burn them as MP3, or as regular audio? If he only burned 12-15 songs per CD, then it's regular audio. If he did indeed burn them as MP3, then did he perhaps use CD-R as opposed to CD-RW? Many CD players may be able to play CD-R, but not CD-RW. Even different brands of CD-RW media can give mixed results.

    Thanks for your replies.
To: Wavetar - yes I finalized the CD's
To: Goldfish - I use a CD-R and what is Nero?

my brother used an external cd-writer and used an audio cd
i don't have any special audio cd
can i use data cd's to put music on them?

Ok, you finalized them, that's good. Now, you gave some conflicting information. You said you used CD-RW in one post, and now you say CD-R? Which is it? There's a big difference between them when trying to use them in a regular CD player.

Nero is a popular CD burning software program...many CD burners even come bundled with it.

There are no specific 'audio' or 'data' CD's. Any CD-R/RW can be either, depending on what/how you burn them.

It sounds to me like it's one of two things. Either your player isn't MP3 compatible (it should have an 'MP3' sticker on it if it is) and your brother burned the CD's using WAV files, or you're using CD-RW's, which your player has a problem with.

What I meant, I used both CD-R and CD-RW cd's to put music on.
I checked the cd my brother burned, it has audio tracks on.
Also checked the booklet of my stereo player, and it says, that "Only compact discs having the mark ""compact disc digital audio"" can be used with this unit.
The cd my bother used to burn on is a CD-R audio cd, where none of my cd's that I used say audio on them.

I had the same problem some time back and while I don't know much about a lot of the technical issues, I tried the burning with RealOnePlayer and for some reason, it worked!!! I've been using it ever since. I use the free version found at

    Good luck!

Hi GrreatRon; Thanks for your message. What kind of cd's are you using to burn music on with the ReaPlayer?

    Hello bigbazza;
I was afraid of that, because I did not want to buy a new player.

Marnick, You don't have to buy a new player. You only have to buy CD-R's or CD-RW's with the word audio on them. They may be slightly dearer than normal CD-R's or CD-RW's but not enough to worry about, especially if you buy them in bulk, or spindles. Bazza
