Music Files causing disruption

Hi all, I having a probelm with the pc I cant seen to solve. After getting online and playing some music through media player, the songs will get stuck, and the system will freeze up. Then only a manual switch off will work, when done and turned back on the usb mouse doesnt work, so that needs to taken and put back in. Ive tried different media players and songs and it still does it, ive tried both through the soundcard and onboard sound and it still does it. Any ideas please, cant work without music sometimes

Please list system specs, OS, when it started, what you changed before it started, etc. etc.

 

xp home service pack 3
pentium 4 3.0ghz
1gb ddr ram
nvidia geforce 6200
onboard sound was c-media 8738

started two weeks ago, doesnt happen everytime but enough to warrant investigation. Nothing was changed that im aware of, except the addition of an external drive (although not always connected when the issue arises)

 

Can you update those sound card drivers?

 

Yeah, I done that, its happened five times today. The fifth time was different, screen went blank and displayed this error message: cannot display this video mode, change computer display input to 1280x1024@60mhz. I did the usual manual turn off, and had to replug the mouse again as that didnt work when it rebooted.

Sorry the soundcard I took out was the cm media 8738 pci 6 channel, pc is currently with the Realtek onboard sound, does the same on both though
