    Hi, and welcome to MG's,
With you having a Dell machine you should have a service tag attached to your machine, using this tag you can find and resolve your issue with the audio on the dell website.
In your device manager are there any yellow ! beside the sound, video and games controller ? if so highlight and scan for hardware changes or up date drivers.

    Hi

It is likely if you have just installed XP SP3 that you have not installed all the drivers yet and mainly a crucial one in the Chipset driver, this is needed to be installed to allow many of the other drivers to be aquired correctly by Windows,

The yellow ! marks as mentioned are a good clue as to whats missing.

So as you have a Dell Dimension 2350 all the drivers are HERE for XP

Download and install the Chipset driver from HERE and then install and reboot, do reboot as its needed to allow the driver to install correctly.

then install the Audio driver from HERE and reboot and test sound.

Then if ok, check for any other devices that have yellow ! marks in Device Manager and grab their driver from the first link.

If not ok, then please post back and give us a brief comment as to what happened with the driver install, did it go ok, if not what error messages did you see, did you check the Audio properties in Control Panel and make sure thr playback device is set correctly, in Services (found in Administrative Tools in Control Panel) was the Windows Audio service set to Started and Automatic Startup Type.

    Greetings, chessmaster.

When you click the links that DavidGP provided, a 'Download Options' dialog box should open, with the options of 'Download via Dell Driver Download Manager' or 'Download via your Internet Browser' - choose the second option ('Download via your Internet Browser'), and your browser should then start downloading the file(s).

Thanks Again for your response. I have Avira, winpatrol. I have tried several virus protection programs however they all are memory hogs. do you have any suggestions for this? I am thinking about install spybot and spyware blaster. I tried antispyware and spyware terminator hogs... I also have crapcleaner..

I have just today installed spyware blaster and spybot. I installed Panda virus Program. I t was listed on greek website as 34mgs or so and it turned out to be 110mgs or more am going to uninstall and try AVG. WHAT i WOULD KIKE IS TO FIND A PROGRAM THAT USES VERY LITTLE RESOURCES. I hope this helps in solving my sound problem and driver updates

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

Frankly, I'd advise against AVG until they work out their current problems - support forums have been rife with AVG troubles recently.

I'd suggest avast!, which runs very well on XP systems and is certainly not a resource hog.

I have a feeling, though, that you've got some underlying problems, maybe caused by the installation and removal of so many protection applications. Frankly, if I were in your shoes, I'd do the following:

    1. Search for any dedicated uninstall programs from the different protection programs, and run them.

    2. Download and install Revo Uninstaller to further clean any traces of the uninstalled programs.

    3. Run CCleaner's Registry cleaner to clear up any leftover fragments in the registry.

Thanks again. I use Revo to uninstall programs and I do use crapc. I willunistall AVG and try Avast again. the geek website list the program at 47.6 mg however the program is around 140mg. IS their not a virus program that uses less than 50mg and does the job? I will search and try to find when with less Mgs.
    Thanks Again,

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

Usually, the file sizes listed are for the downloadable setup.exe of the program in question. Once installed, virtually any program is going to expand to a much larger file size, and other files are going to be decompressed that are used by the program - hence the much larger total size once installed.

    I doubt you'll find a good antivirus program that's less than 50mb when installed, unless it's a command-line version.

I talked to software and they said I might...need to reinstall service pack 1,2, and 3 of course they wanted me to purchase a new warranty I am not sure what to do, any suggestions?

    Hi

I dont know about a new warranty as that eeeks of sales pitch over tech support!

So if sound is still an issue, do tell us what devices in Device Manager have yellow ! marks if any and also try the below, only if you are happy editing the registry, if nto find a friend that is.

What this is geared upto is to fool Windows XP SP3 into thinking it has SP2 installed, which will allow you to install the UAA driver which could theoretically be corrupted, may have been malware.

First re-install your Chipset driver as I listed earlier and reboot then follow the below.
