    BIOS advances one day????

Do you mean the system time and date settings?

yes that's what I meant-i'm in a spin! When I go to CMOS setting in BIOS it has also changed. This happened twice so far. I just change it back in control panel, but lots of other erratic stuff is happening. like timeouts and atapi/disk errors in event viewer, application hangs.....

Have you checked to make sure that the time and date are set correctly in Control Panel as for am/pm?:)

Just a thought, but maybe a bad battery?

Norton screws alot of things up, I wouldn't be surprised if it's affecting your BIOS.

My friend bought Norton and his modem broke. :p

I dont know if Norton can screw up your Date & time
Just incase Norton is the cause try this:

CMOS/MOBO battery? Never heard of bad one advancing time but ya know they only cost a couple bucks
Just because a MOBO is new doesnt elinamate the posibility of crap battery

    Here's a couple Norton's

i reckon yhose nortons are a heap better as hardware/even software than the other version. Anyone disagree?

The best kind of Norton for sure.....great bikes Asus (is the bottom black one an old commando?)

Jeannie....i too, have not heard of a bad CMOS battery advancing time but i guess you could not rule it out!
I would change it just to be sure, but before you do that you could try resetting your CMOS settings by pulling the battery out (5-10 min), shorting the jumpers, and returning the battery, rebooting and see if it helps.

If lots of strange things are ocurring on your system, are you quite confident that malware is not the cause?.....just a thought

    Regards...

How do I short the jumpers, Nitecrawler? Think this might be beyond little old me? I thought malware might be the reason too. Some weird stuff happening like disappearing HDD and optical drives which reappear later? Ultra DMA converts to PIO until you uninstall and reinstall controller? Seemingly because of timeouts. Anti virus software (first AVG and Bit Defender, then Norton then AVG, Ewido and Spython) detects nix. Sound goes sometimes until I reinstall it through Foxconn Mobo Cd - Realtek onboard audio. HDD overheats (55C to 62C ) according to SMART but Western Digital says ignore unless grinding and crashing. A couple of blue screens of death but ne relapse. Probs sometimes shutting down, applications hang, lots of error reports (mostly NVidia, or Disk or ATAPI timeouts...). Been checked at computer shop. They say software?? Mostly it works fine when I turn off and reboot. Do I need to repair or reinstall Windows XP? Hope not-I'm a beginner but doing lots of research online. Currently studying PC hardware assembly at OTEN. Feeling a bit of a dud..
