    Hi,

I can't download files with my computer for some reason, I can get around on the internet fine though. I've got a cable modem with 3 mbs speed. I checked to make sure that downloads were turned on in IE security options and it was. I aslo checked another browser (Opera) and it can't download files either. Then I thought it could be a virus or the OS (which is windows xp home edition) so I used a utility to turn my entire HD to 0's and then reinstalled windows, still can't download. I thought maybe it was the network card or the cable modem or the connection point, so I put the network card in another computer and used the same modem and the same connection to the internet and it worked fine.

So now I'm at a loss, I've narrowed it down to not being the OS, virus, network card, internet connection, cable modem, web browser. Please help.

    Thanks in advance

Also, what happens when you try to download, any error messages?

    Thanks for replying,

No, I'm not using a firewall and no there are no error message's. The window with the flying paper and the progress bar comes up and it usually gets about 30k or so and just sits there.

Is there a firewall built into windows xp that I could disable? Or is there a registry edit anyone knows about?

YES...... Start > Settings > Network Connections > right click your internet connection icon > Properties > Advanced and if the Internet Connection Firewall is ticked then untick and reboot.

Have you checked out if windowsupdate is downloading for you as Wyatt said above? or tried to download from different sites ( is it just one site that you cannot download from ) or if you have AntiVirus try using the update from the AV and see if it finishes its update.

I turned off the windows firewall and stiall can't download. But I noticed that on my 'Local Area Connections Properties' I don't have a client driver installed and the description for that is it 'provides access to files and computers you are connecting to'. Does anybody know if that could have anything to do with my problem?

Ok, first off, can you load any web pages at all? If not, check to make sure your network card is installed correctly... Right click on My Computer->Properties->Hardware Tab->Device Manager. Are there any items in there that have a triangular yellow icon on them, or a red exclamation mark? Specifically the Network Interface Card under Network Adapters? If so, you probably need to install/reinstall the drivers.

To help us out, list the make and model of your network card.

If that is not the problem, then have you already gone through the internet connection wizard on this computer? You'll need to do that before you can connect to the internet. If not, then go to Start->Programs->Accessories->Communications->New Connection Wizard. Follow the steps it takes you through.

Actually, you haven't quite narrowed it down to
not being a virus. If you have an older version
of XP, you could be getting the w32.blaster.worm
virus whenever you log on to the net (you don't
have to download anything, it intrudes through
an RPC buffer overrun). You can download
a cleaner for it at Symantec (free of charge),
and MS has a hotfix for the problem (Symantec
gives the address to the hotfix on the cleaner's
download page). Just go to Symantec.com
    and search for 'w32.blaster.worm'.

Though the no-download isn't documented as
a part of the problem, I've had the worm
before and I had the same problem you are.

    Hope this helps

I'm connected to the internet through a cable modem and I'm using a Linksys LNE100Tx Version 2.0 Fast Ethernet PCI Card. Yes I can open web pages just can't download, and it seems I can download most things except exe files.

Powercycle your cable modem, remove the nic from Device Manager and let it redetect.

Thanks Rataplan for emailing me the symantec w32.blaster.worm program. But it didn't find anything. And I have plenty of space on my HD. But whats odd though is I was able to get your email you sent and save the file attachment. But I can't just download with a web browser?

It came through on a different port. It also doesn't use temproary internet files. Did you clear temporary internet files?

I still reccomend the above suggestion :)

Can someone tell me what their registry HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe has in it? I'm pretty sure now that it has something to do with either the port that downloads come in through or a registry problem with exe files.......... I can download zip files and such and I can download files through attachments.

Your problem probably isnt there then, its here:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions

Look for a subkey that is called .exe

If there is one, back the key up and delete the .exe subkey.
