My computer has 'died'

Yesterday, I was just playing UT2k4 and then, all of a sudden, the monitor turned off and the computer started to act strange. All the time, the orange light blinks while a beeping sound comes from my comp. Somewhat like the sound it makes just after turning off. Now, whenever I try to turn it on, it just does this, and I have to switch it off from behind 'cause the front power button doesn't work at all. What's going on here?

I am so worried I caught a strong depression. I had a project just about to finish and get released, and now I'll have to delay all my work...

Thats a really strange thing to happen. How ever the orange light on the front of the computer is usually the HDD activity light, if that helps at all. If you know your motherboard and BIOS that would be helpful information also, since sometimes diff mobos have diff beeps for errors.

also when you turn it on does the monitor stay black, or does it post and show the BIOS screen or anything?

With some more detailed info we can be more help.

I have an ASUS P4S800 and the screen just doesn't get any signal at all. Neither do the keyboard nor the mouse even. I do think too it's an 'uncommon' problem, since my dad can't even figure it out too, and he's really into hardware.

Thats a really old mobo, from what i see they dont even sell it anymore. I would troubleshoot by removing all of the unnecesary components and going to basics, (onboard video, 1 RAM stick, 1HDD ect.) and see if that helps and then add compentets one by one and see if you can find that part that causes the problem.

After you tried everything and if it STILL doesnt work, it could be your mobo since its really old, so i would also look into that as well if all else fails.

    Desktop or laptop?
If desktop, you could install a PCI or AGP graphics card as a test to confirm whether your onboard graphics is gone.

Desktop. Also I've already found a good AGP one for 58€, it might be that or any other thing. It could also be the recent addition of an extra 512MB RAM stick... Well, if something happens, I'll answer soon. thx.

Well, it seems to be fixed. My father has been testing all kinds of mobos at work and found a good one. My comp will arrive at home soon if all goes well. :)

Sorry for 'displeasing' you, but that mobo got fried too, now I have to buy a whole new comp... ¬¬

By the sounds of things, you've either got really dirty power in your area and need a real nice surge protector or a UPS, or you have an issue with your PSU.

Its most likely dirty power however.

Looks like my father found another mobo. Yesterday, he told me that my computer was fixed. We brought it home. Guess what? A new HD with Windows 7!

Man, the worst thing is, the damn W7 demo is freekin' slow, and my father just tells me to test if for a week and then he'll reinstall WinXP. It seems I have to wait again...

I just have one question? Does the CPU speed change much if, like, I change from two hyperthreaded P4s at 3GHz each to a single one at 1'6?

What a relief! No need to buy a new one. *phew*
