Please help me, I am running windows 2000, and I have F-prot running as well as Spy Sweeper. I also have a popup blocker. However, My computer is still giving me pop ups, and when I have any type of web connection open, I can hear my computer clicking, and suddenly my caps are locked and and the computer is dragging butt.....going really slow! I have tried running spy bot, Ad aware, A squared and nothing seems to work....does anyone have any advise?

When do you get the popups ? (The popup blocker only works withing your web-browser. The popups you are experiencing could be from an enabled Messenger Service)

What firewall are you using ?

When the computer is running slow, is there any processes in the Task Manager which uses CPU power ? (Besides System Idle)

well, I'm getting the pop ups all the time, especially when I first open my web browser. as for the firewall, just the DSL router....I know....not good....as for the task manager, I haven't seen anything that is peaking out my CPU......at one time I had something called Jerod on there..I think it keeps coming back

Since you have already checked your machine for spyware, trojan and virus (With updated definitions), then my guess is that you have configured your DSL router to forward all ports to your computer, so check that your Messenger Service is disabled

For the CPU usage thing, then you are pretty vague, so I can only suggest to check if you have disabled the Indexing Service.

turring off the messenger service has stoped some of my popups
this is how you do it

To turn off the messenger service:

-Click on the Start button and open the control panel.
-Open the Performance and Maintenance control panel and go to Administrative Tools.
-Now double-click on Services, then scroll to Messenger.
-Double-click Messenger and click Stop to stop the service.
-Change the startup type to Disable.

Guess you are not meant to disable it then :)

You could consider to let it be and install a software firewall.

But if you don't mind poking around in the registry, then you might be able find some useful information here (Exchange rpcss with messenger)
