My computer is almost dead except for internet access

    Hi,

I received a message from Microsoft that I needed to reinstall drives for Radeon. I have a Radeon monitor. I went ATI and downloaded Microsoft .NET Framework and Catalyst Control Center Package, which are the 8500 series drivers for Radeon. As per instructions, I first uninstalled the catalyst drivers that I had.

After I did that, I can't do anything else except to go to Safe Mode/Safe Mode with Networking. I tried to do a System Restore and I received the message that my computer has been restored to the restore point that I created earlier today but my pc won't boot to my desktop. I tried to restore to last best known configuration but that didn't work either. I tried installing the drivers that I downloaded while in Safe Mode (a long shot) but I received a message that said that my drivers couldn't be found.

How can I get my pc to boot up again?

How did you receive this message from Microsoft?

Have you got a restore point early than the one you tried? One from a day or two ago maybe? The fact that you can get to Safe Mode indicates that it is the driver that is causing the problem or something worse

You should be able to "Roll Back" your driver to previous driver in "Task Manager' in "Safe Mode" if it wasn't a malware. Hope that helps

Dang my "Old Fart" fingers were just to slow eh Steve

My sister sent me an ariticle that she read on the internet. When it opened, a Microsoft page opened with it "Catalyst Drivers and Uninstallation Guides - Microsoft -- Word has recovered the following files. Save the one you wish to keep." It had 2 files, the original and the one that was saved in my Restore Point today. It led me to ATI but I didn't want to use the links provided in their link. I Googled Catalyst drivers ATI. One of the search results was ATI. I chose Windows XP Pro, 8500 series. It said not to install the new drivers until I uninstalled the drivers that were in my pc. I downloaded the drivers and saved them to my desktop. I used their wizard and uninstalled the drivers.

I didn't try a rollback or a restore point to one created previous to today. I'll try both and see if they work, but first, how do I
I know how to get to Task Manager by right clicking on my taskbar, but what do I do after that? There's no option for Roll Back.

If safe mode is working use the link I listed.

I'm there now but I don't know what driver to roll back.

It may be easier just to go to an earlier restore point as you know how to use that. :)

Click the PLUS SIGN to expand Display Adapters. Choose the one listed, right click and select properties. Roll back is listed as one of your options under Driver.

Ok, the rollback worked. I had to try 3 times. The first 2 times froze up.

    I love you guys . . .

A restore point that was created yesterday by Windows Defender didn't work either.

This morning, I had just updated several antivirus programs, cleaned my pc of all its excess baggage (CCleaner, RegSeeker, defrag, Dial-A-Fix tools and options, Processed Idle Tasks, etc), and it was humming along like it was new. I don't know why I received that message from Microsoft and I don't know why ATI would instruct to uninstall existing drivers before installing the updated ones since it left my pc with no display drivers which, somehow, caused my pc not to be able to boot up. But I'm glad to have my baby back.

    Hi,

Since yesterday, each time I open a Word document, I receive this request from Microsoft, which caused the problem:

    Which one should I save?

Those are just guides, I suppose. Shouldn't matter which you keep or save.

It's strange. I've never received a message from Microsoft when I open a Word doc. It recommends the recovered one so I'll choose that one, but I hope it doesn't require me to reinstall my drivers again.

When I tried to save it, it asks me for 'save as' . . . any ideas?

It's a moot point now. It couldn't save the original and when I clicked on 'save as' it opened to the folder that contained the original file. Since both were exactly the same, I gave it the same name and it replaced the existing file. . .
