    Hallo there!
I have win98, with AMDK6 processor, 189Mb RAM 79-86% system resources free on a Packard Bell "club". I have had this system since Sept.1999 and just recently Jul 2005, it has decided to keep going into standby mode. My power scheme is "always on" the others are set to "never". when I enter setup, I see standby is disabled. this has never happened before, and it's done it twice while I'm typing this!
I have Zone Alarm, AdAware Se, AntiVir9x, Spybot SnD (all updated Sat 23rd Jul) and spyware blaster latest version as of 23rd Jul. I also have the most recent windows critical update (as well as all the previous ones)
none of these programmes show anything amiss. Hijack this log shows the same as it did some months ago. when i restored spywareblaster "snapshot from before this problem started, a screen came up saying nothing had changed.
I'd appreciate some help as it's driving me round the bend (it's just done it again!)
Nothing else seems to be wrong, the computer(desktop) has not slowed down at all, it just keeps going to "standby"
    thanks in advance
    Sammo

It may sound a bit daft but set the power scheme to something other than "always on" and if that then (hopefully) works reset the power scheme back to the "always on" setting.

    Hallo Yargwel,

    Hi Sammo,

    Ok try this:

    1. Right click My Computer.
    2. Click Properties.
    3. Click Device Manager.
    4. Double Click System Devices.
    5. Double Click Advanced Power Management Support.
    6. Click Disable in this profile.
    7. Click Ok.
    8. You must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect. Do you
want to restart your computer now? Click Yes.

Pompey has changed a bit over the years by the way - the J&J factory has now gone. I used to see it every day as I used to work about 100 yards away. In fact you would not recognize that neck of the woods at all now!! ;)

    Hallo there,

I've done what you suggested, and now just the monitor is switching off!!! what I did notice is that the radio button for "standby" was no longer in the shutdown dialogue box. I trully don't remember seeing it there before my problems started, it was there however before I did your suggestion. Is it possible I have inadvertently activated this standby option? I can't believe that myself, as I don't tinker about too much, due to limited knowledge of what goes on.
    thanks for your help.

Re: Pompey, I hope they haven't knocked down that pub which was over the road from J&J, the one with the downstairs eatery, good food and lager.

    regards

    Sammo,

Are you happy with the monitor turning off - or is it going into its own standby mode to save power - or is it still occurring at in appropriate times?

The pub was the "Harbour Lights" and is still there although it has just been "done up".

    Hallo again!

I'm not really happy with the monitor switching off every 10 seconds! but it's not doing it all the time, sometimes it goes for an hour, sometimes 2, sometimes it doesn't do it at all. I couldn't really tell you if its going into its own standby mode, as I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. (it's just done it again!)
In a desperate attempt to stop this, I activated a screen saver, as it seemed to me the computer seems to "think" its inactive. i left it running nearly all day and it didn't switch off. As soon as I moved the mouse to go back to the screen, wallop! damn' thing switched off.
    Any more ideas?

    thanks for the pub update.
    regards
    Sammo

    Hmmm....try this...

First enter your BIOS/CMOS Setup by pressing the appropriate key (usually Del) specified in your computer/motherboard manual during the bootup POST (Power On Self Test) screen, and DISABLE ALL (Advanced) Power Management (APM/ACPI) settings, like: "Standby Mode", "Suspend Mode", "HDD Power Down", "Video Off" etc. Save your changes and reboot.

After your Windows GUI comes up: open Control Panel -> Power Management -> select the "Always on" Power scheme -> make sure the "Turn off monitor" and "Turn off hard disks" boxes show "Never" -> click OK/Apply to save changes.

We'll try a few other things if this still doesn't help.

    Hallo Mr. Gray!
Thank you so much for your time and thoughts. I'll have a go at your latest suggextioons, but not for the next couple of days, we are in festival season, and I must look after all the drinkers and eaters!!!( I have a small bar and restaurant, If you fancy a trip/holiday, do a message etc,)
for the nonce, when the monitor turns itself off, the computer goes beep, beep, beep, very softly
    Best regards

    Hallo again,
Please accept my apologies for the first reply. I realised afterwards that if you've been good enough to think about my problem and recommend actions, the least I can do is act on them; once again my apologies.
I've changed the CMOS (whuhdat?) did the control panel power management and so far the monitor has stayed on. What is "delay for HDD" mine is set to 3sec.
    Many thanks and kind regards

    Hi Sammo,

    Delay for HDD:
Some HDDs require some spin-up time in order to be identified correctly. This setting lets you specify how long the BIOS has to wait.
Set this as low as possible to boot faster

CMOS - complementary metal oxide semiconductor.

Hope the bar and restaurant are going well. :p

Closest I've ever been to Barbados is Andros Island in the Bahamas where I occasionally go for business purposes but the thought of a drink on a Barbadian beach certainly beats any pub in Pompey!!

    Cheers! ;)

    Hi Sammo,

Glad to hear it appears to be OK now. :D

Thanks for the offer re trip and the e-mail address - but be careful about using your e-mail address on a newsgroup like this - the spam bots will find it and you'll be inundated with junk!!

    Hallo yarg,

I really am grateful for the solution you gave me!and I don't turn the air blue anymore, unless of course I have an "oshitsecond" wherein i press the wrong button!:)

however, being a bit of a tit, and bearing in mind the history of my computer, what could have caused the problem? Or could my computer just be tired and shagged out? It does seem to be working properly(?)as far as I can tell.

anyway many thanks and kind regards(and I've learnt how to use smilies!)

    sammo

PS how can I edit out my address?

    Sammo,

I think it is just that Windows Advanced Power Management isn't very advanced - in fact its still a leaneer that throws a tantrum every now and then

As for editing out your address I think you can only edit your messages for a few minutes after posting them.

    Cheers
