So I just got all the parts for my first computer and I busily put it together and it worked at first, but then when I was installing windows with my friends the computer suddenly turned off. The room began to smell like smoke and my friend, who was there with me, touched the cpu fan and burned his hand. I called the people at AMD and got a replacement cpu and fan and once again I was happy. I put them in and alas it did not turn on. When i press the power button very slowly the cpu fan spins about 10 rotations and stops. I know the power supply works because I tested it. My question is what could be the problem.

Well, the best bet is still the power supply. How did you test the power supply? Just making sure it can turn it's own fan doesn't count as testing. Since many broken and completely useless power supplies can do that.

Alternativly it could be the motherboard, although if all these pieces are new it's not likely. If it's not the power supply it's more likely that it's something you've got hooked up wrong then anything else.

Although a problem like this is almost always PS related. It may have something with you having set the 230/115 switch on the power supply incorrectly too.

I tested the power supply by hooking it up to the dvd drive the non cpu fans and the hardrive putting a paper clip between the fourth and fifth pin on the top of the twenty pin connecter and watched it all turn on.

I suppose it could be the motherboard because i never tested it and i just got a new cpu not a new motherboard.

I'd still suggest checking the power supply before messing with anything else. Odds are it's still the power supply.

Shorting the power supply that way isn't a good test. All that you've proven is that it is still putting out something. Usually when a power supply dies it dies slowly, which means it starts providing too little power, which would cause things like the computer to shutoff randomly and cause fans to spin slower then they should since it's not providing enough voltage to the devices, although it's still providing some.

So I'm still betting it's the power supply at fault. If you really want to test the power supply you'll have to hook it up to another motherboard.

Is the cpu fan plugged into the motherboard!!?? It should be, and that being the case...I would say that either the power supply isn't getting enough power to the motherboard in order to sense and operate the cpu fan...and/or the motherboard got fryed during your meltdown!! Personally, I would first replace the PSU!!! Before you do anymore with that new CPU!! You don't want to run the risk of ruining the second one!! if you motherboard is new, then you might be able to get an RMA service from the manufacturer, and replace it!!

As bad as that may sound....It happens!!

you were right it was the power supply. However now the dvd drive doesnt work, and when i plug the moniter into the videocard it says that there is no signal, although the fan on the videocard spins. And there is no built in video so i dont have to switch the jumpers... so does anyone know why?
