My desktop is crashing constantly...

Ok so i was recently helped with getting files off my desktop with a hard drive enclosure...i figured cleaning up the drive would stop the crashing. I also bought another fan for my computer and installed it after cleaning the inside of the computer. So, i have ruled out being a overheating problem... while i was cleaning up the disc a bit i scanned the hd from my laptop with AVG free edition. The bad news--it found 6 viruses. the worse news--i couldn't do anything about 4 of them from my laptop it seemed. The deal is that i'll start my computer and it will freeze after about 5 minutes. It did last for about 10 for the first time after cleaning up and installing the fan but now it's back to the 1-5 minute time. With such little time i cannot run any programs to scan for the problems. I was wondering if maybe i should reformat the computer and if so...how do i do that? If not what else could i do!?!?! any kind of help would be great...i'm beginning to get a bit frustrated with the whole ordeal.

Okay your in the wrong section entirely, DO NOT REFORMAT your sys but instead follow the most important link at this site and then post in the Malware Removal section:

It may take time but it is a crucial houskeeping task that should be undertaken every 6 months at least. The thread will show how to minimise such events in the future.
