I get an Error 105 ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED attempting to access any website. Is this the dial-up server failing to transpose the web name into the numerical address?

This doesn't happen often but it did happen today, and it's maddening.

Yes, it is a DNS error. I take it you have tried multiple browsers?

Is your DNS information automatically assigned by your ISP? Have you checked to make sure it is not being statically assigned, which some malware likes to do?

Yeah, this was with an IE clone, Firefox and Chrome, but it was a Chrome error message. All is well now, but I wondered at the time, if I had the DNS addresses, could I have done a work-around?

As for automatic or static assignment, I have no clue.

Not sure if my ISP is on the same page as you, but to quote them:

"Dial up establishes a unique IP address upon connection. With our high speed service the IP is static but reassigned periodically. With high speed if a customer wants a permanent IP there is a small additional charge. That's not available for dial up customers."

    Hope that helps.

They are talking about something else.

Chances are the dial up connection also assigns your DNS. If you had DNS of your own, it would help only if the ISP's DNS servers are offline.

Google provides free DNS servers to use.

I can now answer your question about the DNS server assignment, having now made the necessary changes in that part of XP for the first time. Default setting is for auto, now changed to the Google servers. Thanks again.
