telus is my provider and i have noticed that my speed kbps is rarely 28.8 and is usually 26.4 .my questions are,has telus slowed my kbps and is there a way to get my speed back up there to 28.8 or above and keep it there?this happens on all cpu's that i hook up to my phone line so it has made me suspicious of my provider.im not too cpu literate(prvt. geek maybe)but definately not a major geek.also, ive always used free software(avg, spybot)as well as the windows 2000 home xp sp2 etc protection.thanx for your time.pharmer d over and out.

Actually, that's a pretty small overhead, I had a 56K line and rarely got over 50K, normally at 48K or so. The overhead is the housekeeping stuff for any internet connection. Seems like you're getting what was advertised.

  3. I had similar experience with dial up but like AugieDoggy said it sounds normal ours was up and down esp, noticible at high peak times like weekends etc when lots of people are online!!!!:)
If you get probably less than the minimum 26.4 then I feel you got right to moan......:major

That is, as stated by Aussiedoggie a very small difference and you will likely get that or greater discrepancy during any data transfer.
Usually the reason for slow connections on dialup are consumer wiring. Any old cable or joins will slow you down.
I was on dialup for a long time and my connection speeds were anywhere between 15kbps and 30kbps as my house is old with old cable and lots of joins. I ended up running new cat5 cable to every room and out of the house when I renovated and speeds jumped to 50 kbps on average.

It could also be bad/old cable/connections in the street but in most cases I've found it's the consumers cable.

there are 2 things you can do to help out your speed situation.

    1. at 28.8, that means there is a lot of interference on your lines. Most likely, this is coming from within the house. Get a phone cord that is long enough to go from the modem to the phone-box outside and plug it in directly there. That bypassess all the lines in the house and guaruntees you a better connection.

    2. depending on the modem you have, you can put an init string into the modem settings that will help you with your connection. assuming you have a typical softmodem, follow these steps: (assumes you have windows XP)

click on start - control panel - phone and modem options - modems - properties

the first thing to click on is the modem tab. on maximum port speed, set it to 57600. then click on advanced. in extra initialization settings, put in the following command. AT&F&C1&D2+MS=v90,0

just curious to see if my advice helped. Seeing as how i spent 2 years as techsupport for a couple of dial-up ISP's... i got quite a bunch of dial-up tips and tricks i can use to help you out.
