This question is perhaps for general discussion regarding the Windows My Documents folder vs a shortcut to My Documents folder. Is putting a shortcut to a document that is within My Documents folder on the desktop as acceptable as just creating a new folder & transferring the contents fm one to the other and placing it on the desktop? Was curious if folders take up less space on the desktop or do shortcuts? Either way you have a duplication if the main file is kept within My Documents.

I do a lot of work in Word and will create a shortcut to that document on the desktop while I am wotking on it. Once it is done I then remove the shortcut. It is really six of one six of the other. Your choice. A shortcut takes up literally next to no disc space so it really just your preference. :)

One thing about putting a copy of a document on the desktop, will after awhile and the accumulation of them, create your system to really slow down in booting up, plus it just doesn't look very neat. Why do you want them on your desktop? You can activate the My document folder in the Start Menu so they will be handy there too. lol

I put everything I'm working with on the desktop.. everything, then I just archive it to the appropriate folder once I'm done with it. It may look messy, but sometimes that's the only way I can remember what all I've been doing.

Putting a document (or a shortcut) on your desktop simply puts it in the C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\Desktop folder.

And the My Documents 'folder' on your desktop is actually a special shortcut. Right-click it, Properties will allow you to move it anywhere and show you it's actual location.

Like Bocce said six of one, half-dozen of the other. It's all just disk space.
