my driver wont read DVD R- or DVD R+

    on the front of my driver is says CD-RW/DVD RW+& DVD RW- yet i cant get the drive to read ether one of them. any suggestions? its a 4 year old sony vaio 3gig processor. Im trying 2 back up my system & it only takes 1 DVD or 9 cd's so im trying to use the DVD. have tried both the DVD R+ & the DVD R-.any help would b great. thanks in advance:confused

    Hi Stevieink,

    Perhaps the drive has gone bad. It's possible on a 4 year old system.

    A new drive is buyable at Newegg.com for only $20 or so.

    o...i forgot 2 add that is burns cd's just fine. if that helps any.

    Are you aware that a DVD/CDRW drive has 2 lasers? 1 for DVD's and the other for CD's.

    The DVD laser might have gone bad.

    Not every backup program will write to DVDs. For example, I use Acronis True Image v8 - it only backs up to CDs. Later versions of Acronis will back up to DVDs.
    What program are you using to backup? Before we consider the DVD part of the drive dead, let's look at the backup program.
