    Hi,
my burner is having some sort of issue and I don't know what it is or how to solve it!
My OS is Win 10 Pro
I have 2 dvd burners, one is a samsung SH 222AB and the other one with the issue is LG GH24NS95.

Now to the problem. The LG one doesn't always read an empty dvd. Its a 50/50 thing.
What it does always read without an issue are CD (music, burned myself and empty), DVD (movie and burned myself).
It's been doing this for the last 3 weeks or so. Some days it "sees" an empty dvd but after burning a disc it then doesn't. In "my pc" it then is classified as an CD drive but it still reads everything else just not empty dvd discs.

I have 6 different kinds of Empty DVD brands.
Today when it was still a DVD Drive it only recognise 5 out of my 6 DVD brands. So it was already wierd. The Brands that I have are TDK, Tevion, Maxell, Philips, Verbatim and Sony. The one that wasn't seen was Sony. The 50/50 thing I couldn't say with the other brands, didn't try them until today. Been using Sony for the past few weeks. After I burned a disc it didn't recognise any of my brands.

What I've done so far is:
I've unplugged the cables and put them back
    Firmware is up to date
    changed the cables
    in troubleshooter everything works

If its broken then or on the road to be ok, I'll get a new one. It's just wierd how it was acting today... Why only be able to read 5 out of 6 brands... There're all the same in a way aren't they? And it wasn't the disc, the same disc was recognised in my other burner..

One possibility is that Windows updated the dvd system driver to one that is broken. It happens.
Try rolling back the driver (use device manager) and rebooting. That might to the trick.

Thanks for the suggestion but it won't work. When under Device Manager and I open properties for my burner, the "Roll back driver" isn't available. The Driver has never done an update because it never has needed it. When I "update driver" it says I already have the best driver software installed. I think it's had it. I might have only bought it in 2013 but it seems to be broken already. Sometimes you can have a burner for 10 years and sometimes stuff craps out after a year.

DVD/CD burners can have up to four lasers; two for writing and two for reading. Each is reflected off of a mirror up to the media and then reflected back to an optical receiver.
    Problems:
The laser(s) get weaker with age so one or more gets flakey and then craps out altogether.
Dust and air contaminants dirty the mirror(s) and the lenses, exacerbating the first problem.
Dust just plain clogs the mechanics (sometimes fixable with blow-off)
When the drive was $360.00 for an original X-Box, it was worth tearing it apart to fix it. When brand new ones are sub $20, you just replace them.
