I was looking to overclock my cpu so I googled and found a how-to. The problem is, their cpu out of the box is different from mine according to cpu-z.

    Mine/theirs
    Wolfdale

    Core voltage 1.104v...........theirs 1.176v

    Core speed 1596.1mhz........theirs 2539.2mhz

    Multiplier x6.0....................theirs x9.5

    Bus speed 266.0mhz...........theirs 267.3mhz

    Rated FSB 1064.1mhz.........theirs 1069.1mhz

The manufacturer of my pc is lenovo which upon research seems to have locked users out of the BIOS. Is that why my cpu appears to be underclocked even below the normal speeds?

the cpu will clock back when not needed but under load it will speed up. It's a power saving feature.

Than-you for answering. I've tried to use Ntune to adjust the cpu settings but can't get the tool to open(there is a guide but it dls as a PDA and opens encrypted) are you familiar with Ntune? If not what other tool would you recommend for a beginner?

I don't generally oc but someone may know what you need or you could seek oc help in oc channel.

Generally, overclocking with OEM systems is more difficult. If you read the overclocking guide in the OC section there's a program that you can use to adjust your FSB, but it requires you to know the manufacturer of your PLL crystal and stuff. Make sure you use the right one or else you can really kill your computer.

Yeah I spent several hours trying to get the PLL info for my system (lenovo) but my PC has little to no support. This was a fill-in because my old PC is suffering seizures.

NOTE: Do not purchase a lenovo desktop. They are so driven to protect their systems that tinkerers are shut out.

Believe me, my next rig will be built by me to my own specs. :)

Well, actually pretty much all OEM systems are like that. My Compaq computer had its CPU glued to the heatsink.

The PLL is usually right next to the 14.3mhz clock crystal. They are pretty easy to locate because they look very distinct.
