My email address hijacked

Some b**tard has hijacked my email address and is sending emails with viruses attached, to people I have never heard of.

How is this possible?

Apart from advising my ISP and cancelling the email address, is there anything else I can do or someone else I should tell.

I use the email address only to detect Nigerian 419 scammers who use this address ( that I have on a West African website that I am interested in ). It (my address) also appears on my biography that is one of many stored on that website. I have also advised the website owner.

I haven't searched Google as yet but have gone straight to you brainy ones,

Its called email spoofing.

Someone, who has your email address in their address book, is infected.

As such, the irus "spoofs" itself to hide the origin, and uses an address book entry as the sender.

Not aware of anything you can do about it. You can blame the people who
A: dont use antivirus and get infected.
B: Dont kep AV updated.
C: Those who blindly open email attachments.

 

Your email address is most likely being spoofed by the virus, and not actually used to send the virus attachments. This is a common practice for self-mailing computer viruses. I wouldn't worry about it if you have an up-to-date AV program installed and running.

Thanks a lot for the info. I have AVG and ZAPro installed and run Cleanup!, Spybot and PestControl very regularly. I dont think my PC is infected but will run latest update of AVG to check again.
