My First Laptop

I finally got my FIRST laptop the other day, it is fairly good, but that is not the point.

I bought a router and hooked it up to my desktop comp (since it has the cable modem). No problems, everything works fine. Now, when I got to college and connect to one of the Wi-Fi connections I always get this "Limited or no connectivity" because it could not set a network address for me, why? I've tried repairing and everything.

This is really frustrating because I am very good/knowledgeable when it comes to computers, but I am new to networking especially w/ Wi-Fi.

Please help, I really need the net at college.

 

Do you have a static IP set, or are you using a DHCP server?
What type of router is this?

Post more info, and your chances for resolution will increase. Don't be afraid to go overboard.

 

the colleges campuses where I am at use mac filtering and require each student to register their mac in their database.
