Hi all (long time no post for me)

I've just had the oddest lil experience and thought of knowhere better to share than with some fellow geeks....

I decided to watch a vid i DL'd last week and burned to CD (699MB) for storage and i remember putting it in a spindle cake and put the file *on one of my externals* aswell , but thats not very helpful in here as ther is countless spindle cakes full of discs evrywhere in here, and my "temporary" film storage system is a mess really and i am lucky to find what im looking for if icant remember what the file was named so i just thought:

*whatever, ill just DL it again and save the time looking for it*

    WTF!!!

I cant believe i thought that, i remeber it taking hours an hours and hours to get files that size, and here i am with my 20mbps line and my (close to) 5TB of HDD space and last count over 2000ish DVD's (8000TB) (probably about 3000ish now(12000TB) too many CD's to count but is more than double the amount of DVD's easily [i wouldnt bet much on more than half of them working though :( ]

And then ther is my laptop [or one of i should say] that has got more GB of RAM than my first HDD had, hell i've got a tincy little chip in my phone that is bigger than the first 10 HDD's i had :|

I cant wait to see what ive got when/if im 90, we will all probably have 50-PetaByte HDD's.... or bigger maybe (what comes after a PetaByte?)

I still cant get over it being quicker to DL than to find and run a disc,

    /shocked

:: Just out of curiosity, how much HDD space and Discs do you have?

    What comes after a PetaByte?
A visit to the hospital. Boom boom!

    Taken from Wikipedia:

    Value SI 1000 k kilo 10002 M mega 10003 G giga 10004 T tera 10005 P peta 10006 E exa 10007 Z zetta 10008 Y yotta

Incidentally, it was predicted by an IBM worker that by 2012 the internet will have 1 yottabyte of storage, which is enough to hold all of Human knowledge. Except, thanks to duplication and redundancy, it won't.

Also incidentally, the USS enterprise NCC-1701 had 1 yottabyte of storage.

At about £50 for a 1.5TB HDD at the moment, having a YottaByte of space doest seem to far off tbh.

I currently have spread out between my main PC, my "work" PC, and external drives about 2.5TB of storage capacity . . . that doesn't count other PC's I own but are currently not being used (like the kids old PC's in the abandoned basement game room . . . ).

I too am amazed at how cheap drive space has become . . . my first PC had a 2GB hardrive and I thought I'd never be able to fill it up . . . :-o Hell, my USB drive I carry with me is a 4GB . . . and I got it for 15 bucks like a year ago. Amazing.

I remember on a Star Trek TNG episode one of the characters referring to computer memory space in "TeraQuad" amounts . . . I wonder what a 100TQ drive will cost . . . and how much bigger is a quad then a byte? :p

    Oh, ouch. That was painful

LOL @ drive space, my first one was 20MB with 1MB RAM back in mid 80s with an 'earmuff' 1200 baud modem. Now I got 1TB drive space(%80 full:eek), some 400CDs and 100DVDs.
