theres no rhyme or reason to it. the stupid thing just randomly shuts off. i dont think its a temperature thing because most of the time i immediately turn it back on and it stays on for hours more. sometimes it takes a couple of times to boot up after the unexpected turn off but once i get to my desktop its usually good to go for quite a while until the next episode. the only thing ive noticed for sure is that it doesnt happen at all in safe mode.
im running a fresh install of xp home with sp 2 (32-bit). any help i could get with this would really be appreciated because its really frustrating especially because it usually decides to do it right when im like downloading something (and it seems to wait until right before the download is complete) or installing something.

    PLEASE HELP.

    thanks
    jeff

    Hi Jeff

If the insides of the PC are clean from dust and fluff as in the fans and grills as well as the CPU heatsink and fan then heat may not be the issue and as you have mentioned this does not seem to happen in safe mode.

So the potential issue is likely to be an application although its weird for one to randomly cause a PC to shutdown, but you can test this anyways by using msconfig to remove all startups and then see if your PC works ok, then one by one add each startup application back, and reboot and test

click Start and then Run and type msconfig in the run box, then click Startup tab and untick all startups, then reboot and text your PC, if it doesnt work ok and shutsdown then let us know. If it doesnt shitdown like you have been havingm then enable only one startup and then reboot and test, if that doesnt shutdown your PC then enable another and so on.

Also please supply the below as written

so when i do msconfig and disable all the startup entries the avastUI and the NvCpl are automatically enabled when i restart and the shutdowns keep occurring. thanks for taking the time to help me out

Do you have a Nvidia graphics card in this PC as "NvCplDaemon RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup" is associated with the clock and memory for these Cards, anything NvCpl is Nvidia.
