My Internet Explorer is toast!

Apparently I have had/still have a virus or highjacker that has completely messes up my IE. I'm running Windows ME. When I try to open IE I get a message "Internet Explorer has caused an error in (unknown) and will shut down." I have tried to "fix" it with add/remove. One time it said that some files were missing and to start over and it would download the missing files, but it didn't work. I tried reinstalling it from Microsoft. Nothing. I figured out that I could go through "Help and Support" and I downloaded Netscape. I've run all kinds of virus scans (I purchased Mcafee Virus Scan, but it will only download with IE) and spyware removers, hoping it would fix the problem. Nope. Is there a way to actually uninstall IE and still function enough to reinstall it? Any help would be appreciated.

 

Try Mozilla Firefox.

 

You may have some sort of virus or something on there that is preventing IE from working. I would try running SpyBot Search and Destry and Ad-Aware. For normal browsing though, I agree with the previous post. I would switch to Firefox because IE has a ton of security holes, but try to fix IE because if you don't, some things from Microsoft like Windows Update, and Office Update won't work.

 

Well, i would advise you not to use Windows ME, ME is a terrible OS.

 

Try http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html. Run it and you might need a keen mind to analyze the results but anyone familiar with this program can give you some help when you post the results. I imagine you have also tried to rebuild from within Windows?
