I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post so please direct me if needed. My mom was recently scammed by a company called Advangate for $1200 for "security services". I know at this point she probably can't get the money back, but my concern is what they can do now that they have all of her information including bank accounts, ss #,s, credit card accounts, etc. They took over her computer to show her "how she'd been hacked", so they have access to everything. Can anyone tell me what we should do from here?

    TIA

    :(

It may be too late already but she should immediately contact any bank or card company with which she has accounts. She needs to inform them what has happened and get the accounts blocked, for card use, internet access, cheques, direct debits or over the counter transactions. Then take it from there. It is going to cause a lot of problems but unavoidable.

Hello and welcome to Major Geeks.

I am really sorry to here about your mom getting hit by these people.

I would hope by this point, your mom has called her bank, credit card companies and any other financial institutions and be sure to report it and most likely be assigned new cards.

She should also make a list of any accounts she uses her computer for and she should change the passwords for all of them...especially her banking.

She should do all this from a clean computer.

What has she done as far as the computer being infected?

She hasn't done anything so far, she just called me this morning and didn't even know she had been scammed.

    Thank you!

Tell her to do this all today. However she paid these people, whether it was a credit card number or her bank, she should report it to them and tell them she was scammed. They may be willing to do something for her.

She should not use this computer until she knows it's clean. If you are near her or if you think she is able, she can follow these cleaning procedures: READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide (incl. spyware, virus, trojan, hijacker)

These scammers are smart, they had her pay them via paypal and they refused to do anything because it's not a "tangible object".

I will help her with the cleaning.

    Thanks so much!

You are welcome. Good luck with it all. Just make sure in the meantime to go through all her accounts with her and change them all to completely new and different passwords. Use your own computer to do this.

Just heard about this scam and done some research online they are targeting people that download their free scanning tool and showing them they have been hacked and charging numerous amounts of money of people for their services which either are ineffective or don't exist at all. I would contact the bank and get them to raise it with the fraud team and don't use the computer until it's cleaned as it might have a keylogger installed or some other password gathering software to gain access to the computer again.

Yeah that's exactly what I suspected too. We are taking it up with the bank on Monday. You should see the receipts, they are extremely unprofessional. There are also reports that this company has done it to other elderly folks. thank you very much for your response.

When you are dealing with a parent who is elderly it's frustrating. I'm trying to get her to act, it's just not as easy as it sounds. I guess I didn't realize they have fraud lines open 24/7. On Friday she told me she couldn't get a hold of anyone until Monday so I just let it go at that. :(

There is a comment on the Better Business Bureau's website by a woman who states they did this to her mother as well. (The exact same scam for almost the same amount of money). The company is actually called Divine Tech Solutions LLC. Advangate is one of the types of software they supposedly provide.

We found out recently that avangate isn't actually responsible for this, the company is called Divine Tech Solutions and they used avangate as a cover. Avangate actually helped us retrieve some of the $.
