My mouse decided to crap out on me for some reason.

My sister-in-law was using the computer (kept using right after I did, so nothing was wrong at the moment), and while she was using it, the mouse "just stopped working".

I've looked around the board, and I tried out some of the tips given (did a malware/spyware search, did some things w/ the registry, unplugged/replugged the mouse), but I couldn't get rid of the issue. If anybody can help, I'd greatly appreciate it. I've been forced to learn new ways of getting around the computer using just the keyboard.

Oh, and I'm using a HP mouse (model P813I-O) that was shipped along with the computer. Could it be a driver firmware or anything like that? Thanks a bunch.

If you can, can you get to mouse properties in control panel?
Also, can you get to device manager and see if a mouse driver is listed?
Aaaaand finally, lol, can you try another mouse at all?

Yeah, I can get to Mouse Properties. But it doesn't list anything in the Hardware tab, and I can't understand why.

I can't remember how to get to Device Manager, but I got to it once during one of the salvation methods I tried out. I recall that it didn't list anything like "Mouse/Other Pointing Device" on it. I was mostly looking for Host Controllers, Root Hubs, or some such thing.

And yeah, I tried another mouse (Microsoft wheel mouse 3.0... old as all hell, I bet, but 'ey, it's the only other one I had), but it didn't work either. I looked back in Mouse Properties but it wasn't listed.

To get to the device manager you should be able to right click on My Computer then choose Properties.

As for your mouse problems you need to go into the Device manager and delete any mice that show up under "mouse". Then reboot the PC and it should redetect the mouse. See if that helps.

To get to device manager via the keyboard, please do the following:

    1. Hit windows key + r
(if you don't have a windows key, press crtl + esc, arrow to 'Run', and press enter)
    2. Type 'devmgmt.msc' (without the quotes)
    3. Press enter.

This will bring up device manager. Use tab to get into the main window, and use delete to remove a device from your system.

...okay, something strange just happened today. Last night, after posting my reply, my mouse was still fartsy-tartsy. This morning, before I go to school, it's still crapped out. But then I come home and all of a sudden the mouse is working again. I don't know how it happened; maybe my brother managed to work out some magic. But thanks for the help, anyway. If this ever happens again, I'll let you guys know.
