My New Baby Needs a New PSU!

I am feeling quite distraught ATM as I tried to skimp on the PSU but my 500W Antec just can't do it though the two 9800GT's are humming along just fine with it thank you.

My poor hungry baby needs more food than I can give it at the moment!:cry Ya know, I knew better but still went ahead like an idiot. What was I thinking?:confusedCan someone please give me a swift kick in the butt or a 2X4 upside the head? :-D Looking at a 750W Thermaltake ToughPower ATM. That should do it.:boxing

Oh, some of the sharper folks will notice that along with the two GPUs, I've also got an instance of Ubuntu multicore SMP in VMWare going. Just a hint for you folk that have quads.

With all the extras we are running power is a priority.

Both my desktops have got Antec 750s and the one running the GTX295 is still on the edge with all the extra fans i have had to install (you could cook eggs on it before)

 

Mea culpa Bill. Hey, that's good news on the 295 man, I really hope they're quiet fans.

 

I have 4X80mm fans in the case and the GPU still feel very warm but i think with the 2 cards in there it will generate a fair amount of heat.
I am still not running the VM yet but hope to get thing back to full production this week.

ps Why are you playing with the PC and not sleeping????

Skimping out on a PSU. Sounds like Canadian health care. :-D Hope you get it sorted soon Augie. My Folding team's home page is 404 now. I will give them a few days, and if it is not up, your team here may get a bit of a boost.

 

Augie is getting things sorted, i have seen it with his folding points.
He has had a traumatic week with the PCs.
We fold for a small team with just 14 members but we are doing well for our size, we are currently 275 but no where near MGs :drool

 

It's better than paying shareholders a tithe for the privilege of having a HMO.:-D

Ya, I grabbed the card because it was at a fantastic price but I didn't have the scratch for a PSU ATT. I'll have one next month.:cool I do have a credit card but I couldn't convince the gf that this was an emergency!:-D

 

I just read a post by Digerati which really pounded in the nail on the head! I'm running a Q6600/4GB RAM/ 2X 9800GT/3 SATA HDD's plus heavy duty folding all on an Antec 500W, some 9mths. old. The calculator says I need a 900W PSU! :eek :-D

I'm sure that the truth lies between what nVidia suggests as a minimum (500W) and the calculator be it the two 9800's or the 260. I think I'll err on the side of caution here and spend a few extra bucks on a good PSU rated closer to 900W considering as I already have some $1.4K invested in this sucker and can't afford a meltdown because of being cheap. Who knows, there might be second 260 in there soon.
