I finally got a new computer and got this one:

    http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4614928&CatId=2650

It's new and not "opened box", but the above was all that would come up in the search. Right now, I only have AOL dial-up for internet access and I have been trying to download AVG, Spybot S&D and other programs from MG's to no avail. I'm going to try to get the installation downloads from my old HD. I was hoping a 4GB processor would cause AOL to be faster, but not so.

Any other suggestions for securing my new computer? What about XP Pro's Firewall that is included or should I use OutPost?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you! :)

Dont use windows firewall, yes get Outpost or Comodo or Zonealarm [all free] :)

Dont use AVGfree, get Avira or Avast instead.

Spybot and MBAM are very good app's, a must have in my opinion, so stick with them.

Unfortuantely i dont think any amount of processor power is going to speed up an AOL Dial-up connection, you really need Broadband tbh :(

I can't help but notice Domluc's post was clearly refering to me....

With all due respect Dom' I always recommend Comodo & Avira [if not Kaspersky] and i do that for what i thought was an obvious reason, i believe they are very good app's.

And clearly Majorgeeks agree with me as Comodo is 1st on the Firewall list & Avira is 1st on the AV list. [no it's not alphabetical :p]

I always advise people not to use AVG as it is a very poor AV, which is widely known, and i have personal experience with it's failings....

And again Majorgeeks [sort of] agrees with me, and points out many of its failings False positives being a biggy with that turd of an AV.

I seen the OP's system was more than capable of running any security and got the feeling that he wanted to use a free app' and even had one in mind that i regard as a good one, so i had no qualms dishing out some swift and direct no-nonsense advice.

I guess my form was not the best... BUT... I stand 100% behind my first posts advice.

One more thing to clarify something. I've always "heard" that the firewall included in Windows XP Pro is not very good and I've had problems being able to download files from the internet with it on, so that's why I asked about what would be the best. Thanks again.

The XP Firewall shouldnt be causing you any trouble with downloading.
