    Hello all,

I've looked elsewhere for an answer to this but nothing seems to give a satisfactory answer. My problem is that I just bought 1GB of Ram extra for my machine that had 512MB Ram previously. There are two slots on my motherboard and I know that the maximum Ram is 2GB. However, only 1GB shows up in the System file.

I'm pretty sure that the other stick is well installed. Here's some spec details: Windows XP Pro 2002 SP2, Intel Celeron 2.8 Ghz. Any help would be, as always, gratefully appreciated.

first hold the windows key down and press the break /pause key

The system properties box which opens will display the amount of RAM windows sees.

If you don't have the extra shown then remove the original 512 and see if the new ram works at all in either slot.

You will need to post motherboard details and RAM specs for us to help further.

need mother board model and ram type and make to help determine problem. It could be that it wont read 1 gig double sided ram or that the 512 came loose in install or even a bad ram stick. It may also be compatibility with mobo.

edit: guess I typed a hair too slow :)

    Hello,

I'm not sure exactly what you need or how to get hold of it but I put the motherboard install disc in and found 'Driver Path' which told me the following:
    Model Name: 661FX-M
    VxD: VGA/AGP/SiS
    Sound: Sound/RealTek
    RAID: RAID/SiS
    Lan: Lan/SiS900
    IDE: SiS
Are these enough details for the motherboard?

My 512MB cannot possibly be faulty because it has been working on my machine since I got it about 3 years ago but I could try switching slots.

My new memory is SAMSUNG, 1GB, PC 3200 DDR 400 Mhz 128x64 HIGH DENSITY & SUPPORTS DUAL CHANNEL.

Thanks people! I just switched the slots and it recorded 1.50GB immediately upon boot-up. Perhaps they really weren't installed properly, I dunno. Thanks anyway, you two.

If you kept the 512MB in the original slot, that might have been the problem. Some motherboards prefer the higher stick in the first slot (slot 0). Just something to keep in mind if you help someone install additional memory.
