My old computer was knackered so I gots a new one.

Now I want to know if there is anyway I can access my old hard drive, I set it up in my new computer but it wouldnt' let me access it. SAying your computer shut down on last system start up, possibly due to a power failure.

No matter what I selected from the start up ( start windows normally, safe mode or last known good configuration) it just takes me back to the same screen on an endless cycle.

Is there anyway I can gain access to it or is it dead?

    Thanks

Have you set the jumpers on the the old hard drive to make it a slave rather than the master it would have been originally?

    How would I do that?

I just removed my current one and placed my old one in the same way.

What you need to do is put the new drive back in as it was. Then look on the pld drive near to the connector and you should see a small row of pins with a small jumper which connects two of the pins together. You need to move this jumper to the slave setting - there is usually a small diagram just above the pins on the HD case telling you where it goes. You then put this HD into the PC so it connects to the spare connector on the lead that is already connected to the new HD. Plug in a power lead to the old drive too.

Now with luck you should be able to see this old drive when you boot as the next available drive letter (D: for instance).

Hope I've made it clear enough for you. :)

Reinstall your current one and boot, your system should come-up, then shut-down install "Old" drive with jumpers set toSLAVE which is usually clearly marked on the drive, some have switches some jumpers ALL achieve the same result. Then you should be able to read that drive, windows will tell you that it see's a new device installed, just click yes to all new hardware requests. Hope that helps you rodders Sorry to late

I have installed it andf everything is fine.

Only problem is that when I try to access my old documents I get the access is denied, because I need to be longed on using that old user account... I think.

    Any more help on offer?!:)

I'm assuming you're running XP and I'm no expert in that but have you tried logging in with administrator rights and trying then?
