my optical drive disappears.. help?

hi.. the optical drive on my laptop just kind of disappears from the system a few minutes to hours after i turn my laptop on.. the icon in My Computer disappears and whatever disc i put into it wont load. you can hear it whirring inside and all but it wont load.. the tray still opens and all but it just wont load..

my specs are

Asus F9J
intel core2duo t5600
1gb ram 667
vista home premium
5.25" 12.7mm Super-Multi optical drive

can anybody help? please?

edit: oh right.. i forgot.. i usually have to restart my computer so i can use the ODD again..

 

When it disappears from My Computer is it still listed in the Device Manager? There's a couple things you can try: in the Device Manager, right click the drive and select Uninstall, then reboot and let Windows 'reinstall' the drive. That may help. Copy this into a notepad document and save it as cd.reg
Then just click on it to repair the optical drive.

This is a typical fix for "missing cd-rom" in My Computer, Windows Explorer, and Device Manager.

However, there should be no need to "adjust" the other reg keys mentioned;

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003

especially if listed as CLASS***** in a reg file. The full class information should be identified.

You may not even have a ControlSet003 key.

If you were to make the reg file, it should only contain;
(everything between the double lines, including any blank lines)
