unsure whether software or hardware, but I want my own page?
    I want a page, basically a thread,where I can
    keep a journal-thoughts
    have pictures(not hosted)
    links(so I can add links)

I like vbulletins forums set up, but I don't need anything as big

where do I go and do I need anything?
I want ot have my own url and link so when people ask me something I can just give them that link about me/what I do/the science behind my thoughts

so I'd pay for a website builder, but what's best or is that what I need?

    Hi

Think a forum type software could be a bit too large for you as you mention, one of the options you has is a webbuilder type thing or similar in Wordpress as its a blogging software where its like a journal and can post pics and links etc, here is mine http://gobbledgeek.com/ not upto date but gives you an idea, you can get great deals at present on the likes of GoDaddy for domain name (URL) and hosting of a webpage or Wordpress blog.

Others may also have some alternatives for you, plus always best to research what you need and the options before jumping in

you pretty much have what I want, only I'd like a page that has a index, so I can have topics people can jump too.
how did/make you get your page?

you are in the UK? I'm in the usa

    Hi

GoDaddy is based in the USA so support calls and help will be easy for you if you get stuck.

What I did was buy a domain name many years ago and costs a small fee every 2yrs to keep active, then I used Wordpress to create a free blog and they have many already built themes that are free you can use and customise as it has many add-ons like the index you noticed, you can also have multiple pages/tabs to list different info. Then I moved the blog from Wordpress's servers to a friends server where its hosted now. Wordpress also allow you to have your own domain name opposed to the free ones with .wordpress.com at the end.

e.g. myname.wordpress.com is the free option and myname.com is a paid for domain name and will need a small payment per year to keep that domain name active

Think the easy option is at present try the free Wordpress blog option out but choose a good name for the blog, one that could be available as a .com etc later on.

David, I appreciate your input, I'm going to look into when I have time..... BUT
I don't want a blog. I want a page that I can put links on(to science stuff) and pictures and above all, I need an index. You have a page that is essentially a long post.
This is why I mentioned Vbulletin, I like how they are just a forum/index so I can form a blog(journal about my thoughts) or I can have separate topics which I can expound on.

how hard would it be to have a site like a vbulletin site? do I need my own server?

    I see sites like this
    http://www.peaktestosterone.com/

and this guy has what I want., sorta
his site is very disorganized and all about "click bait" to get you to click around his site and his site is too big
but he has a forum, although not Vbulletin

    Hi

Blogs can be split up into many columns and rows, I just chose that format as it was fitting more my guides and articles. Can just take a little search to find a template already created like this news based one you like or can start the task of designing your own. So its likely you need a website domain name, then a compatible host to host vb forum software, then design your site (note do need to really research compatible hosts) good tutorial to setup of vBulletin HERE (note not a recommendation of this host as I dont know enough about them)

Can I post pictures and links like I can on this forum?
I know vbulletin forums, which is the only reason I find them appealing... I know nothing about hosting or being a webmaster.
I really appreciate the time/effort you are giving me to help me out. I'll let you know what happens next...

    Hi Homer

Yes in Blogs and a forum/webpage yes its no issue.
Think we need to explore your need and what you wish to deliver to the world and then see what options are best?

    Are you still pursuing this?

Godaddy has some pretty straight forward options that may be what you need. They have geared the whole process to be easy for the new webmaster. Pick a hosting package and get a domain name free, and the website building tools you need are in your godaddy console. Be warned, as you are checking out for your affordable hosting package, they will trick you into upsell. You probably don't need any add ons that cost money.

This site is a basic setup using godaddy "middle" package, not the cheap-not the expensive, the middle one, using the linux server option. It is a basic wordpress format. If you call godaddy, which has USA based tech help, they can walk you through it in your control panel on godaddy site. It really does not get any easier.

Yes, Im still looking into it
Ive just gotten busy with family stuff and work and havent had time to figure it out
I like the idea of stright forward options
basically I want a "page" that's just text and a few links thrown in
so not much to it. how much do you think this "go daddy" set up will cost?

According to their website, GoDaddy websites are on sale right now. Normal prices start at $5.99/month for personal pages and $9.99/month for business. You can of course pay more depending on how much stuff you want, how much you want them to do for you instead of doing it yourself, and a whole host of other things.

In your spare time take a look here http://www.w3schools.com/

They have been teaching basics to advanced web stuff for quite a long time. The basics in HTML will help tremendously.

I agree on this as when the basic web tools which work well that come with many domain and website builder apps have been exhausted to what you may need, a knowledge of web dev is good, also even if you are not experienced and a pro, the guides can add web content you need easily.
