This sucks, i am 14 and I make money but legally I can't have a credit or debit card, this wouldn't be a big deal except that my parents trust NO online retailers, not even new egg, I can go to ibuypower or build my own computer with newegg and save up to $600 off the local computer place. I saw a 19" LCD monitor with a 5egg rating and I couldn't get it even though i could afford it, $189 after rebate.I have been saving up for a computer and it is gonna take me months I was considering buying it piece by piece when it goes on sale on newegg, then i could try to build it myself. I have never built a computer before but I know a lot I think, enough to build one, tyhe other option would be ibuypower or Cyberpowerpc.com they both have great prices on gaming computers, right now I am using my dads computer.
    Hp pavillion 750n 1.6ghz 400 p4
    512mb ram
    80gb7200rpm hd
    geforce 5200FX

I am trying to get something like this-
    Athlon 64 3500+
    1gb ram
    160gb SATA hd
    geforce 6600GT
    SLI capable mobo
And a nice big cool case for upgrading.

Why dont you just give your parents the money and tell them if it goes wrong its your problem.

at 14 you should be riding bikes and hanging out with friends computers are for old boring people like me.

    Where did my life go?

Is it actually the online retailers they don't trust, or the thought of putting their credit/debit card details out on the net? Do they use the net a lot and understand how to make safe and secure purchases? Sometimes not understanding and just hearing all the media hype about people getting ripped off can scare some into not wanting to do it.

i have heard of pre-paid credit cards, ask them if you could put your money into one of them and make your own purchases???

Well, it is more people getting thier info they are afraid of but it is kind of both, they basicly refuse to listen if I argue my point, I can't get them to budge. And I am getting a computer because I love gaming, and 1.my dad is a serious WoW addict, I don't get much time on this computer because of that
2.My dad is a security freak, he freaks out if I download anything even if it is legit
3.this comouter is on the road to become obsolete, it is about 4 years old, and it seems to be slowing down.

The mall in my area gives you a Visa card when you buy a gift certificate now. It can be used anywhere they accept Visa, including online stores. It costs $1.00 for the card and $.50 to put money on it. Once the money on the card is used up, that card is useless, unless of course you put more money on it. (Be aware of the terms of the card, if you don’t use this one for 12 months, they start charging you a monthly fee of $1.50).

Ask your parents if this would be a viable option for you. Take your cash, say you think your PC will costs $600 then take $625 and put it on the gift card (with the Visa or Mastercard symbol), make your purchases and spend the remainder on something local just to use the money up, then cut the card up. Wala, no risk at all.

Most credit card companies now also offer one time purchase cards for free or a nominal charge. Back when I checked into this, they would have given me 12 “free” credit card numbers, each one to be used one time and one time only and then they were no longer good. If I wanted additional credit card numbers, I would have paid something like $9.95 for another 12. Whatever you purchase with each of these cards goes on the primary credit card account and the etailer or retailer never knows the primary credit card account information.

Perhaps your parents could call their credit card company and inquire about this option. Then when you want to make online purchases, they can give you one of the “one-time” use cards to make the purchase with.

These are two very realistic options to discuss with your parents. Both of them offer them and you the added protection it sounds like your parents need.

    Exactly Lev, great post.

I will add tho, they are your parents and it's best no matter how hard to go with their rules, I wouldnt want to go against their rules and regs where you or they are concerned, BUT I will add a bit on my years of using online retailers and banking ( ooooohhhh the scary banking ) well alot as Lev said comes down to the media scaring people as usual, while the internet is not a 100% safe place you can do many things to make it as safe as possible... you know the drill Updates to OS etc and using Antivirus, Antispyware and Firewall etc are all their to make your online experience safer.

I have Banked for near 6yrs on the net and shoped for about the same, TBH its safer than handing your credit card to an assistant and them swiping it through a machine, whos to say they are not cloning the card, some retail and more often not resturants disapear with your card, so you have no idea what they are doing with it BUT you/we trust them??! as for banking, we have all heard of thiefs adding cloning devices to cash points but we still use them? and the worst one is we will happily tell some retailer over the phone our card number and exp date with no quarms...!

While online you do need to make sure you are at the right site and its a recognised one, with data encryption ( the yellow lock on your browser status bar at bottom ) plus with most credit cards you have some protection in relation to purchasing and fraud, so you have the benefit of the Card Company recovering any losses... so long as you have taken duty of care in relation to securing your PC.

They are in the end just trying to protect you and your hard earned cash, maybe you need to research online retailers and security and give them a little presentation into your findings... who knows.

that sounds cool, if I can do something like that I will, as long as it isn't my parents card they shoudl be ok with it, also can I get some advice on how to get the best computer for my money? I poseted what I want and it is "GASP" $930+shipping about and that is with no monitor, I make $115 a month and have $230 as of today and I can't dump all that money in the bank, I need soda pop and video games so I usualy keep $50 and use it for, um stuff. This month Halo and a PC gamepad.

yeah, my parents are really paranoid abot the internet, my dad wont let me download an antivirus though, he said that virus scans are a piece of **** and they never find anything and just use up hard drive space. My mom is computer illiterate and she is the same way really. she is the kind of person who check her email once a week and if she sees a big flashing box that says YOUR COMPUTER ISN'T SAFE she will probably click on it

How come Halo gets paid and we don't ??? Huh??? ;)

If you really want this PC and soon, then forgo a few sodas and video games and you'll save more quickly for a much more beneficial piece of kit :) I guess it's a case of prioritizing your wish list.

When I was ordering everything for my new system, I went to various(well known) retailers online, priced everything up including shipping etc, then used their toll free phone # to do the ordering. I don't like the idea of giving credit card info over the internet. The retailer can usually give you a Tracking#,allowing you to check on your order whenever you want. Hope this helps you!

The most dangerus type of old computer user is the " ignorant i know everything because im 20 years older than you "user.
There computers tend to blow up.

My dad is the other kind of old user he is the "how do i?" user .

lol yeah, he is the one that told me about this site, he only went here a year ago once, because he got a virus, of course he blamed it on me and my sister. I think that sitting in front of this crt monitor for 12 hours a day is rotting his brain with radioactive stuff. :p

No but you still gave your details out over an unsecure phoneline, to a live person who may or may not be so disgruntled with their company that they copy and sell card details?

Can't say I really blame them for not trusting on-line purchasing. Don't trust it 100% myself, as the amount of so-called 'secure' site that have weak security is appalling. And yep, that include many, (bit not all) of the major operators.

Actually, one can insure again fraudulant use of credit cards, if it's that much of a worry.

Well having no Antivirus installed is going to make that more of a reality!

while live/background scanning is preferable, their are many free online scans available from many of the big Antivirus companies... http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ is an example. BUT still does not take the place of an installed AntiVirus and some like Avast and AVG dont take up much space.

their are ways to delete the data/information stored through daily surfing CCleaner for instance, plus even going to the small trouble of ticking "do not save encrypted pages to disk" in Tools > Interent Options > Advanced > Apply will help.

I guess they are set in their ways and thats fine, I wouldnt argue with that as I said in my first post its their rules.. guess you will have to just abide by them.
