I have NEVER bought a computer, have always built my own. My dad is 63, and his computer skills are nill at best.He can turn one and that's about it. I want to get him something he can surf with and maybe print some forms and whatnot. He won't need anything too special no rocket, something he can turn on and use.

Could you guys give me some suggestions please? I don't know where to start.I think buying him one is the best route to go.

    Thanks for any insight!!

Since he doesn't need any major power, just a basic $400-$500 system should be fine. Any of the main PC makers have systems in this price range that will be fine. Personally, I'd recommend that you visit your small local independent PC store, tell them your situation and they will be more than happy to help you out. Besides, with the economy the way it is, it's MUCH more important to keep you money local and to help out the local small businesses as much as possible. I don't even go to McDonalds any more! If I want a burger, I go to the local 'franchise' that has 3 restaurants in the area, instead of the multinational number-crunching faceless behemoth.

Cool, I try to do that as much as I can, I wish more people would.

    Thanks for the input.

I bought a Dell refurbed for my husband. We have a certified Dell reseller in our area. See if there are any in your area. The company gets computers from businesses and then refurbs.
I could request the amount of RAM and the type optical drive. Since my husband only played music, a CD-ROM was fine for him.

You might be able to buy your father a refurbed computer running XP that might not be the fastest but can suit him perfectly.

Sweet, I check it out. That sounds like a good way to go. I do some volunteer work for a computer recycling place that takes in used computers, tests the components, then builds low cost boxes from the parts and sells then in their thrift store to low income people. But they only use Ubuntu. I was going to go this route, but I just started using it a week and a half ago,and dad would never understand it.Its the bundled software on a store bought system that interested me to take this route. And if I'm around,he can get at least some kind of tech support.
