My screen flashes off and on, during startup.

For those who have the ability to view signatures turned off on this forum: I have Windows ME, the AM75-EC/TC Socket A motherboard, an 800 MHZ Duron processor, and 2 256MB DIMM of SDRAM. I have an Award 6.0PG BIOS.

When I turn on the PC I see all of the things that my PC has on it and then I see the Windows ME splash page and then I see the desktop and all of the ICONS, etc.

The thing that I don't understand is that those words that I see before the splash page flash off and on about 5 times, every time I start the machine. Sometimes it's the splash page that flashes off and on 5 times.

It's a new motherboard and it has onboard video. I've installed a NIC, but I think that the flashing has been there before I installed the NIC. I did notice, during the boot process, that the network controller and the display controller are both IRQ 11. I don't know how to change that, though, if it is the source of the problem. Does anybody have any suggestions?

I moved the NIC to another slot and rebooted the PC. That changed the IRQ, but I still saw the flashing.

I've since formatted the drive, but I saw the same problem after installing Windows. I am currently working on my friend's PC and will be using mine again, by tomorrow.

it's quite possible that's just how your monitor reacts to the refresh rate changes as windows boots up. If you have another monitor to try then try it.

    Refreshing rate

    try changing the refreshing rate

right click on an empty spot on the desktop go to properties then settings then advanced then monitor.

The rate at which the system refreshes the monitor might be the cause of your problem. you might want to go as high as your monitor will support. do not go beyond that or you will damage the monitor.

My Compaq laptop does that. Starts out with some post stuff, then goes black, then says C:\ SETPATH (or something like that), then goes black again...........THEN...... makes this strange white fringe thing around the screen, blinks a few times, then up to desktop !!! I thought it was blowing up when I first got it, but the guy I got it from, said it did that since it was new. Works just dandy though. And since the guy sold it to me dirt cheap, and is a friend, he had no reason to lie.
    I wouldn't worry about it. :D

endiablado, I'll check out the maximum refresh rate and give that suggestion a try, once I am done working on my friend's PC.

FW190, I had the same monitor with my last motherboard and I didn't get any flickers at the startup. I recently bought a new motherboard and that's when I started to see the flickers.

Everyone, thanks for your comments. It did work great other than the 5 1/2 second flickers/flashes during startup and the recycle bin error. I'm glad to know that it's nothing to worry about. I'm sure I'll figure it out, one day, or just learn to ignore it.

yup, as long as there are no other issues, then what you see is really a non-issue. If it aint broke.. don't fix it ;)
